Job description

Director of Operations and Senior Water Resources Scientist @ EDI | Professional Geoscientist

We have an immediate, full-time permanent position for an experienced Water Quality Specialist , based out of any of our offices (remote locations will also be considered). In this role, you will support and lead water quality projects across various sectors — with a focus on mining, baseline studies, and environmental assessments and permitting. Working alongside a team of water resources scientists, biologists and environmental professionals, you will contribute to business development initiatives, project delivery, and technical development for our junior team members. This role offers technical leadership, professional development, and a chance to shape your career within a supportive and collaborative environment. The ideal candidate has a passion for water resources, is technically skilled, and has experience in water quality monitoring, data analysis, and report writing.

Our benefits include :

  • Competitive compensation, including health benefits, RRSP matching, profit‑sharing and employee share ownership programs.
  • A corporate commitment to long‑term career and personal development through opportunities and support for professional advancement (e.g., internal mentorship, annual professional development budget).
  • A challenging, dynamic, engaging and rewarding work experience.

EDI is an employee‑owned company with offices across western and northern Canada. Since EDI started in 1994, our people have defined our culture and have been instrumental in our success. As we continue to grow, we look for team members who want to make a difference by helping people and the environment. Our culture focuses on teamwork, a positive attitude, and adaptability to dynamic situations. We promote innovation at all levels. Our members are self‑motivated, enthusiastic for continual improvement and effective communicators. Through relationships built among team members, we realize that EDI is not just a company, it is our company.

The successful candidate will be responsible for :

  • Leading and / or supporting the design, implementation, and management of water quality programs, including baseline studies, operational monitoring, and EA support.
  • Conducting and interpreting statistical analyses and water quality trend analysis in support of regulatory compliance, permitting, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Contributing to the preparation and review of technical reports, including regulatory submissions, water quality assessments, and mine permit applications.
  • Providing technical direction, mentorship, and guidance to junior and intermediate staff supporting team development and project delivery.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, regulators, and Indigenous engagement groups.
  • Participating in business development activities, proposal writing, scope of work and budget development, and building client relationships.
  • Supporting project management and team coordination for water resources projects.
  • Participating proactively in EDI’s health and safety program.
  • We are looking for someone with :

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in environmental science, earth science, water resources, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience, including consulting experience in a water quality focused discipline; additional experience in hydrology or hydrogeology considered an asset.
  • Professional registration (P.Geo., P.Eng., RPBio, or equivalent) or immediate eligibility.
  • Proficiency in water quality analysis tools and data platforms (e.g., EsDat, R, Excel); modeling experience (e.g., GoldSim) considered an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience authoring technical reports and regulatory documentation.
  • A collaborative mindset, with a passion for mentoring and developing junior team members.
  • Job requirements include :

  • Working knowledge of Canadian and provincial water quality guidelines, legislation, regulations and standards (focus on mining activities).
  • Advanced understanding of water quality analysis, statistical interpretation, and trend analysis for baseline and operational data.
  • Familiarity with hydrology, hydrogeology, and geochemistry to support integrated watershed and water balance assessments.
  • Experience interpreting large datasets using tools such as EsDat or similar platforms; experience using GoldSim, RStudio, Aquarius, or other water quality analysis software is an asset.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, lead multi‑disciplinary teams, and communicate effectively with clients and regulators.
  • Professional registration (e.g., PGeo, RPBio, PAg), or eligibility for registration immediately upon hiring.
  • A collaborative and adaptable mindset, with a commitment to mentoring junior staff and fostering a supportive, professional team environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork, including in remote and northern locations.
  • Application deadline – January 15, 2026

The typical compensation range for this position is from $85,000 – $128,000 annually; the compensation offered may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.

At EDI, we are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect where equal employment opportunities are available to all applicants and team members. EDI believes that diversity and inclusion among our team members is critical to our success as a growing environmental company, and we seek to recruit, develop and retain talented people from a diverse candidate pool.
