Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to fill the role of Transitions Coordinator. If you are driven by the desire to empower Indigenous learners and create a culturally enriching environment on campus, we want you on our team!

As the Transitions Coordinator, you play the pivotal role in giving a welcomed reception for first-year Indigenous students at the University of Regina. Your lived experience and understanding of the unique needs of Indigenous learners will contribute to building a culturally relevant community. You will be a main support for their academic journey and retention at the U of R.

What You’ll Do:
  • Craft Memorable Beginnings: Collaborate with Enrolment Services, Recruitment with engaging new learners to choose our campus. Be a driving force in creating a warm and inclusive introduction to university life.
  • Event Coordinator: Curate on-campus events tailored for high school students, showcasing the vibrancy of campus life and the open opportunities waiting for them. Work with first-year Indigenous students by offering meaningful campus community experiences.
  • Student Guide: Guide students through the campus web portals, from navigating course registration to obtaining student ID cards, accessing funding options, finding tutors, and guiding them to services that impact them in a positive direction. You will be a central person for finding the correct supports on campus for first-year Indigenous students.
  • Empowerment: Inspire students to discover their passions by encouraging involvement in diverse campus activities: athletics, Ambassador program, student clubs, student societies, making connections in our Centre, and the University of Regina Students’ Association (URSA).
  • Policy Navigator: Assist students through the challenge of U of R academic policies and regulations, ensuring understanding as they embark on their academic journey.
  • Academic and Personal Support: Equip students with essential academic skills and skills for personal growth via tutoring and student success opportunities. You will also assist with their social and cultural development on campus, via interactions with our Centre and campus supports. You will empower students to excel, inside and outside the classroom.
  • Creator of Connections: Manage a mentorship program that connects ongoing students with newcomers to create a network of support and guidance for Indigenous learners.
  • Student Advocate: Serve as a bridge between students and campus offices, ensuring access and support. Your role is to empower students to become independent learners.
  • Community Ambassador: Extend the reach of support beyond campus. You will be responsible for outreach in Regina and the Treaty 4 area. This will include visiting high schools, centres such as North Central Family Centre and mâmawêyatitân centre, and many other Indigenous communities and organizations.

In this multifaceted role, you’ll be a catalyst for positive change, creating an environment where Indigenous students not only succeed academically but also flourish as active and engaged members of our university community! Position Requirements What You’ll Bring to the Position:
  • Four year Bachelor degree, preferably in a human service field;
  • Three years of related experience; and
  • Knowledge of Indigenous learners, their communities and factors affecting their path. A lived understanding of how those factors impact Indigenous student success at the U of R. A good understanding of cultural protocols in working with First Nations and Métis communities.
  • An Indigenous support and contact person for: first-year Indigenous students, First Nations/Métis community administrators, and various high school representatives.
Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in this Role:
  • Knowledge of Indigenous identity dynamics and how positive cultural development affects Indigenous learners within higher education.
  • Understanding of the organizational and political structures of various Indigenous nations and communities within the Treaty 4 area, and beyond.
  • A clear understanding of how the University functions and the role of various departments, student centres, and faculties on campus.
  • Ability to make decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Active listening skills as a fundamental practice within Indigenous learning.
  • Ability to work in a team oriented environment.
  • Experience working with multiple deadlines and pressing priorities.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and dealing with sensitive information.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with students in stressful moments.
