Position Summary
Applicants are invited from qualified individuals to instruct in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at the Comox Valley Campus. The BSN program is offered in partnership with Vancouver Island University.
The regular Instructor/Learning Centre Coordinator is a vital member of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program team. This position involves teaching the BSN lab courses, and is responsible for directing the operations of the BSN Learning Centre by advancing simulation-based curriculum and faculty development, designing and implementing teaching plans in collaboration with program faculty and overseeing the general operations of the BSN Learning Centre. This position also acts as a consultant to other North Island College health programs who wish to further develop their simulation capacity.
The successful candidate will implement creative strategies in the preparation and delivery of lab course activities; use initiative in providing documentation and follow-up with regard to student concerns and problem resolution; and, bring facilitation skills to management of conflict. The schedule for this assignment will be flexible to meet the needs of the program.
The teaching faculty of North Island College are responsible for implementing the College’s vision, goals, and objectives as they relate to teaching and learning. To carry out their teaching assignments, faculty use organizational skills, relational skills, and their knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, and curricular design. In addition, they have a responsibility to serve as role models for students and colleagues.
Teaching faculty are responsible for attending department meetings (faculty meetings, faculty retreats, and curriculum/evaluation meetings), and participating in NIC committees.

The responsibilities and typical duties listed below constitute a generic job description for teaching faculty whose responsibility may be for the delivery of scheduled classes, the support of self-paced, on-line, and distance courses, and/or instruction and supervision in laboratories and practicums. Duties & Responsibilities 1.0 INSTRUCTIONAL - To plan and prepare learning materials for instructional environments; - To use a variety of approaches and materials, as appropriate, in order to address different learning needs; - To teach in assigned subject areas and to include in courses, and in course outlines, all required subject matter or skill activity; - To direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment; - To be available to students regularly during scheduled office hours and classroom hours, to discuss their progress and other issues that influence their learning. (See Policy #3-03: Faculty Absence from Class – Cancellation of Classes); - To clearly communicate in writing learning outcomes for programs and courses, and the way in which learners will be evaluated against those outcomes; - To design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students and to keep students informed of their progress; - To submit grades in a timely manner, in accordance with Policy 4-15, Reporting Final Grades; - To maintain records of student enrollment and achievement and other records required by the College and affiliated agencies. At the end of employment with the College, to submit marks and student records to the department Chair.
2.0 TYPICAL PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY - To be aware of, and to work within, College educational policies; - To be aware of the Education and Strategic plans and to contribute to their development and assist in the achievement of its goals and objectives; - To advise the Department Chair, within a reasonable time frame, of items that need to be ordered so that inventories of books, supplies, and equipment are adequate for the courses taught; - To advise the Department Chair regarding enrollment management (recruitment and retention) strategies for their areas of responsibility; - To advise the Department Chair responsible, and the appropriate Administrator and/or Campus Health and Safety Committee, of any health and safety concerns and to assist, where possible, in rectifying the problem; - To demonstrate knowledge of computer applications appropriate to the teaching environment; - To maintain continuous professional development of competencies and qualifications as required in the appropriate discipline; - To participate actively as a contributing member of the College community on College committees and other College-wide activities, where appropriate; - To participate in department meetings and other department activities during normal working hours, when possible; - To undertake other related responsibilities and duties which may be assigned by the College when course load permits.
3.0 LEARNING CENTRE COORDINATOR - Collaborates with the BSN department to maintain a safe, operational and learner-friendly environment in the Learning Centre; - Collaborates with faculty across the curriculum to develop and coordinate “best informed practice” experiential learning activities and course materials, and act as instructional facilitator for the new skills framework. - Provides ongoing mentorship, support and guidance to faculty and students in using simulation learning technologies; - Participates in faculty development and mentoring related to current and emerging simulation education strategies; - Ensures operation of and faculty orientation to the Learning Centre operations and equipment as well as ensuring consistency within courses and continuity across the BSN program for Learning Centre sections. - Assists with and/or directs set up in collaboration with the Learning Centre Support Assistant for weekly Learning Centre; experiences; - Provides instructional support as needed during weekly Learning Centre experiences and/or as a Learning Centre Instructor; - Conducts timely remedial skill acquisition activities in consultation with course instructors and/or student self-referral; - Coordinates scheduling and external booking of the Learning Centre; - Assess suitability of new equipment through research, on-site testing, and off-site evaluations of equipment used at other centres; - Meets with equipment suppliers to discuss and evaluate new equipment as it comes to market; - Coordinates purchase of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Learning Centre; - Collaborates with BSN Department Chair on Learning Centre supplies budget and monitors expenditures to be within budget; - Coordinates equipment utilization, maintenance and purchasing of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Learning Centre and maintains inventory; - Projects future needs in consultation with faculty and BSN Department Chair to support the Capital budget process for the Learning Centre; - Develops and maintains policies, procedures and practices governing the operation of the Learning Centre; - Provides mentorship as Faculty Navigator for clinical faculty, ensuring continuity between skills learning and practice placement areas, working with clinical instructors. - Liaises with BSN Peer Tutors and Health Lab Monitors and ensures all parties have the necessary supports, resources and materials as needed. Required Education & Experience - Master’s required, one degree must be in Nursing; - Doctorate preferred; - Previous experience in managing a Learning Resource Centre is an asset; - Previous experience with simulation learning and technology is essential; - Experience teaching adults, preferably at the post-secondary level; - Current registration with BCCNM; - Current CPR level HCP.
