Position Description
Barrick is looking for an experienced Water Quality Field Technician to join a motivated and high performing team at the closed Nickel Plate Mine near Hedley, BC. This position reports to the Senior Environmental Specialist and will be responsible for implementing and managing environmental and field sampling programs associated with Nickel Plate’s environmental obligations.
The role will be part-time, 30 hours per week, working together with the current Field Technician with responsibility for maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting and monitoring tasks to support Barrick’s continued compliance with regulatory and internal requirements. The expected pay for this position is between CAD $ - $
The successful candidate will have a proven record of environmental compliance and the ability to perform all duties in a safe and reliable manner. The role is based at Nickel Plate with some local travel to the Giant Nickel closed site near Hope, BC.
Key Responsibilities :
Provide visible safety leadership in line with our value of creating a Zero Harm Workplace.
Conduct environmental monitoring as required by the Nickel Plate Environmental Management Act Discharge Permit, which includes :
Surface water sampling, seepage water sampling, groundwater monitoring (including pumping & purging) and field readings at all sites.
Conduct environmental monitoring as required by the Giant Nickel Environmental Management Act Discharge Permit, which includes :
Quarterly surface water, groundwater, seepage water sampling and field readings at all sites.
Occasional sediment monitoring
Field readings at all sites
Calibrate, use and maintain monitoring instrumentation such as pH, conductivity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen meters
Conduct sampling equipment inventories and maintenance of equipment storage room
Operate specialized equipment such as snowmobiles and side-by-side vehicles
Complete weekly field reports
Complete data entry submissions
Liaison with Environmental laboratories
Maintain a safe work environment for all employees, contractors, site visitors, and the general public
Actively participate in site safety and health programs
Exemplify Barrick’s safety culture by demonstrating visible felt leadership
Participate in permit required field study programs such as annual benthic invertebrate monitoring
Assist with preparation of regulatory reports as required
Lead the day-to-day management of field data quality assurance and record keeping
Use of software environmental data management programs such as EQuIS
Experience
5 years of previous environmental monitoring experience.
Experience working in a mining or industrial setting.
Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail in :
Data management and record keeping
Ensuring sampling requirements are tracked and completed on time
Ability to operate and troubleshoot sampling equipment.
Experience in managing sample and transport logistics.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with site staff.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Possession of a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
Computer literacy including experience with Outlook, Excel, Word.
Education
- Qualifications in environmental science, civil / environmental engineering, chemistry, or related field.

About Nickel Plate Mine
Nickel Plate Mine is a former gold producer located in the prolific Hedley mining district in British Columbia. The Nickel Plate open pit mining operation ran from 1986 through closure in 1996, with landform reclamation largely completed by 1998. Nickel Plate is currently in a state of active closure with site activities focused on groundwater interception and treatment, environmental monitoring, and final closure plan execution. Situated approximately 45 minutes from Penticton, with easy access to both the Okanagan and Similkameen River valleys, Nickel Plate is ideally located for four-season outdoor enthusiasts and urban or rural living.
