Job description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Parks, the Coordinator of Parks & Recreation Design is responsible for facilitating new park development and park improvements; preparing requests for quotations for consulting for construction services; design preparation, preparation and review of details and specification, contract administration, tracking and controlling project costs. They will also be responsible for monitoring expenditures on capital and operating projects. The Coordinator of Parks & Recreation Design and Development will assist with the development of policies and procedures and provide ongoing monitoring and updates to the park inventory and related GIS database.

The Coordinator of Parks & Recreation Design will be expected to prepare capital project cost estimates, quantity take-offs and calculations, develop detailed design drawings, tender contract documents, and contract administration inclusive of site meetings, preparation of payment certificates, liaison with consultants, contractors and residents through to completion of the capital project.

Qualifications

  • Possess a three (3) Year Community College Diploma in landscape design, CET or related field
  • Minimum three (3) years' related experience working in the field of Landscape Architecture in municipal sector or a landscape consulting firm
  • Ability to analyze site conditions and assess design opportunities for new and existing playgrounds, gardens, trails and open space area projects and provide cost estimates and budgets for capital park/landscape construction projects;
  • Hands on horticultural knowledge and the ability to prepare planting plans and assist in the development of conceptual plans, master plans, presentation drawings and sketch details;
  • Must have a good understanding of landscape construction including construction materials and applications, supervising and instructing contractors, providing on site and written instructions, issuing change orders and making recommendations for payment;
  • Skilled in the preparation of working drawings including specifications and design details as well as RFQ's and tender documents for landscape projects;
  • Experience in the planning and facilitation of community information sessions and workshops;
  • Ability to coordinate, plan and supervise environmental stewardship activities/projects with volunteers, neighbourhood associations and special interest groups;
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS for ongoing upkeep and development of the park inventory database and mapping system;
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple and changing demands and priorities;
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills are essential. Previous experience coordinating and participating in public consultation and liaison with city staff, agencies, community groups and committees is also necessary;
  • Proven skills working with computer applications including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Sketchup, and Adobe Illustrator is required
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Valid G Driver s License and access to a vehicle required
  • Hours of Work 35 hours/week; at times, work hours may include afternoons and weekends, as well as occasional unscheduled overtime, as required.

As a condition of employment, proof of current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications will be required.
