Our client, a leader in real estate investment and asset management, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join their finance team. Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, this professional will play a key role in supporting accounting operations, financial reporting, and process enhancements. This is a prime opportunity for an accounting professional ready to advance within a high-performing, collaborative organization. This position is based in Edmonton, Alberta.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Director of Finance with daily accounting operations, including preparing and reviewing financial statements, budgets, and forecasts.
- Supervise 5 Property Accountants, review of their work and daily on the job coaching and mentorship
- Manage general ledger activities, account reconciliations, and month-end / year-end close processes.
- Ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and regulatory requirements relevant to real estate investments and asset management.
- Collaborate with asset management, operations, and external auditors to facilitate transparent and timely financial reporting.
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes, allocate expenses, and support treasury operations.
- Monitor cash flow, assist with capital activity tracking, and support investment accounting within multiple real estate entities.
- Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to enhance financial processes and control efficiency.
- Assist in tax planning and compliance activities as required.
- Lead and contribute to special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as needed by the Director of Finance and executive leadership.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CPA pursuit is preferred but not required
- Supervisory experience is a must have
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within real estate, investment management, or similar industries.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal control best practices.
- Hands-on experience with real estate accounting systems or ERP platforms is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment.
