Position Summary :

The ASL Interpreterfor GBC Employees provides confidential interpretation betweenAmerican Sign Language (ASL) and English for staff and faculty who requirethese services when meeting with students, participating in departmentalmeetings and other events where interpreting services are required in order toallow full participation in their place of employment.

Key Responsibilities :

Provides ASL and English Interpretation Services for interactions between staff and faculty who are Deaf, non-Deaf, Deafened and Hard of Hearing across a range of college activities.

Settings can include but are not limited to College wide events, meetings between colleagues, Presidential Town Halls, financial meetings, presentations, emergency situations, etc.

  • Anticipates and assists requests for additional interpreters as needed.
  • Reviews and prepares for interpreting situations; studies assignment-related resources.
  • Works with related professionals and establishes linguistically appropriate communication strategies.
  • Debriefs with Deaf staff, co-workers, contract employees at the conclusion of each event.
  • Consults and promotes awareness of Deaf culture with students, teachers, and staff around the appropriate use of an interpreter.
  • Assesses and optimize interpreting environments for successful communication dynamics.
  • Investigates professional development opportunities, enhances skill development, and continues to educate on best practices in the field.
  • Develops and presents workshops on working with an ASL interpreter to increase awareness in the college community and provides updates on areas of interest to guide future planning.
  • Mentors and guides ASL-English interpreter education program placement student activities, monitoring their progress and provides ongoing assessment of skill.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educationaland Experience Requirements :

  • Three-year diploma / degree from a recognized ASL-English Interpreter education program. Baccalaureate degreepreferred.
  • Active membership in CASLI (Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters).
  • Completion of the CASLIcertification process; Certificate of Interpretation - preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ demonstrated experience in educational and community interpreting. Experience interpreting formal / platform presentations in a formal register.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture.

  • Experience dealing with complex issues; ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Experience interpreting through video conference platforms such as ZOOM and Teams.
  • Familiar with protactile or willingness to learn.

Skills and Attributes :

  • Demonstrated bimodal and bicultural competency in ASL and English.
  • Experience dealing with complex issues.
  • Ability to adhere to CASLI’S Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct and to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Willingness to commit to enhancing language and knowledge skills through professional development and through feedback.
  • Above average fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English discourse, grammar and register and written English skills.
  • Solid negotiation, problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and select appropriate actions.
  • Excellent time management, multitasking, and organizational skills; ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines, while working with competing priorities and interruptions.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to be flexible and adaptable in various situations.
  • Ability to travel between campuses.
  • Demonstrated communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills at a professional level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
