PLA 1516 H1S : Developing Affordable Housing : From Start to Finish

Course Description : Developing Affordable Housing : From Start to Finish’ is a multi-disciplinary course open to graduate students from disciplines oriented to the development of affordable housing.

In this studio course, students work collaboratively in groups to prepare affordable housing development proposals for sites in Toronto owned by not-for-profit community groups.

Each group will test out different architectural and urban design approaches for their sites and explore various financing models in order to make their proposed affordable housing projects financially feasible.

The course covers skills in financial analysis, design and planning.

Class Schedule : Wed. 3 : 00pm to 5 : 00pm

Sessional dates of appointment : January 1, 2025 April 30, 2025

Salary : Sessional Lecturer I - $4,728.95. Sessional Lecturer I Long-term - $4,965.40. Sessional Lecturer II - $5,060.88.

Sessional Lecturer II Long-term - $5,163.31; Sessional Lecturer III - $5,181.38; Sessional Lecturer III Long-term - $5,285.01

This posting is for two 0.25 FCE positions to co-teach this course

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications : A graduate degree in Planning or a related field with extensive professional experience in the area of affordable housing development and the not-for-profit sector is required.

Preferred Qualifications : Previous experience teaching this or a similar course for planning students at the graduate University level, covering the full spectrum of planning processes in affordable housing development, is preferred, as well as knowledge of and experience in the private and public sectors of planning.

  • Brief description of duties : Preparing materials for lectures and class discussions; preparing course syllabi and selecting relevant readings;
  • developing, administering, and marking course assignments, tests and exams; test / exam invigilation; holding regular office hours;
  • engaging and collaborating with non-profit community groups in Toronto to develop affordable housing development cases for student groups to work on;

arranging guest speakers in the sector.
