The Strategic Communications Director will lead EnviroCentre’s outward-facing communications, ensuring that all content and publications shared on EnviroCentre channels and through EnviroCentre programs is current, informed, compliant, professionally presented, and aligned with EnviroCentre’s strategic objectives.
The director will ensure that all strategic communications goals are met, and that the communications team provides top-quality support to the full EnviroCentre team in the areas of design, writing, marketing, media relations and advocacy.
Supported by department policy experts, the Director will ensure that EnviroCentre contributes meaningfully and effectively to the climate conversation in key focus areas.
The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of both the communications field and the climate movement, and will have the professional experience required to vet content, engage stakeholders effectively, and navigate the complex social, ethical and political world of climate communications.
To deliver these tasks, the Director will manage a team of three internal staff (supported by three policy leads), and external subcontractors.
The Director is responsible for developing and managing a team that has the skills and capacity to manage the full scope of EnviroCentre communications requirements.
Job DutiesTeam & Project ManagementOversees recruitment and management of the communications team.Directs the development of work plans, production deadlines and content creation to meet program targets and deadlines.
Conducts performance reviews and evaluations.Mentors and supports junior staff.Ensures targets and professional standards are met by all team members.
Targets and ReportingResponsible for achievement of strategic communication and advocacy targets, established in annual business plans and strategic plan.
Manages Communications budget.Designs and ensures timely reporting of key communications analytics.Content ManagementMonitors all EnviroCentre content for quality, tone, approach and strategic impact.
Provides strategic direction and review to all communication and advocacy content.Oversees the development of content for all EnviroCentre’s channels including social media, websites, newsletters, and community outreach.
Provides creative and editorial input into all communications team products.Oversees the development of visual assets including digital graphics, outreach materials, social media content, branded materials and more.
Ensures that content is made available in both official languages and compliant with AODA requirements and other professional standards.
Oversees procurement and delivery of marketing campaigns.Recruits and manages external agencies and contractors (designers, developers, web masters, videographers, etc.
Oversees EnviroCentre’s websites and ensures content and platforms are up to date.Strategic Initiatives and PRDevelops and executes strategic comms initiatives to promote climate awareness and EnviroCentre’s mission and strategic plan.
Ensures effective media engagement and public relations in line with our strategic objectives. Develops and executes media and public relations strategies.
Ensures steady growth in EnviroCentre’s reach and communications impact, in key areas.Represents EnviroCentre, as required, as a strong voice for climate actionContributes to EnviroCentre’s long-term strategic planning.
Skills and ExperiencePost-secondary education in a related field (or equivalent professional experience).A minimum of ten (10) years professional experience, including both project and personnel management.
In-depth knowledge of the climate sector, the current cultural moment, and the local community, including a demonstrated personal / professionalcommitment to climate action and knowledge of local, regional and national actors.
In-depth knowledge of and experience the communications field, including team recruitment and management.Demonstrated ability to create and convene creation of top-quality communications work product.
Exceptional written and verbal communications in English is essential.Working knowledge in French is a strong asset (but not a requirement).
Advanced proficiency with MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point).Demonstrated knowledge of common communication platforms like WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva, Google Analytics, Hootsuite etc.
