Our client, is seeking a Structural Design Analysis, physical inspection and reporting to determine structural integrity and approval for the installation of Customer Facing Information Screens (CFIS) project.

This project will replace current signage at designated TTC bus stations with digital, LED signage.

The Structural Engineer will report to the Senior Project Manager and work closely with Engineering team members, staff, and project team and outside consultants, as required.

General Accountabilities :

Provides structural engineering expertise associated with reviewing engineering

designs of bus stations.

  • Physical, visual inspection of designated bus stations.
  • Review and approve structural framing plan of the existing roof showing clearly where the signs will be attached.
  • To review structural framing plan and confirm the sign locations are acceptable

structurally.

Review and approve the conduit path designs of outside consultants, to assist in the preparation of standard drawings to be submitted by outside consultants.

Note : TTC will provide the drawings of all the stations in the project upon award.

  • Review and approve structural design of all sign drawings of signs to be installed.
  • Takes professional responsibility for engineering and design work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).

Responsibilities :

Review and approve structural framing plan of the existing roof showing clearly where the signs will be attached.

To review structural framing plan and confirm the sign locations are acceptable

structurally.

  • Review and approve the conduit path designs of outside consultants, to assist in the preparation of standard drawings to be submitted by the outside consultants.
  • Review and approve structural design of all sign drawings of signs to be installed.
  • Review and approve, Structural engineering designs, drawings, specifications and contract documents based on established user group and project requirements.
  • Stamp / seal and sign drawings for conduit path and signs to be installed in accordance and as required by the PEO.
  • Provide sketches, marked drawings, guidance and review the work of outside consultants and Sign Manufacturer.
  • Conduct site inspections and review record drawings for purposes of investigating existing conditions.
  • Review and comment on designs, drawings, specifications and technical reports prepared by TTC staff or outside consultants.
  • Participate in meetings and coordinate design with engineers, project team and outside consultants to produce drawings and specifications while meeting requirements established by user groups.
  • Research and incorporate relevant codes and standards associated with the work.
  • Assist with preparation of contract drawings using Bentley MicroStation CADD software.
  • Communicate with authorities having jurisdiction for code requirements, code

interpretations and obtaining design approval.

  • Prepare work plans, preliminary design reports and other technical reports as required.
  • Assist in developing and updating the TTC Master Specifications, Design Manuals, and Standard / Directive Drawings.
  • Review as required for development proposals that may impact TTC facilities and equipment.

Respond to contractor’s request for information, interpret contract documents, and issue supplementary details and instructions as required.

  • Review shop drawings, product data and closeout submittals for general technical compliance with design requirements and contract documents.
  • Prepare technical inputs to addenda and change order initiations.
  • Prepare and assist with the preparation of estimates related to the work and change orders.
  • Periodically review record drawings kept by the contractor, and advise on their adequacy.
  • Periodically visit construction sites to assess progress, identify deficiencies and inspect that the contractor’s work satisfies the intent of the design, and conforms to the plans and specifications.
  • Prepare field review reports for submission to the City Building Department.
  • Attend regular site meetings.
  • Participate in equipment and systems start-up, commissioning and final reviews.
  • Conduct final inspections at the conclusion of the contract, verify that contract deficiencies have been satisfactorily completed.
  • Evaluate contractor’s claims, including the validity of additions or deletions.
  • Promote and maintain professional working relationships and communications among staff, management and consultants as required.
  • Ensure timely reporting of safety or sensitive issues to the Senior Project Manager or other management as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Helps to remove barriers and accommodate employees and customers (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with TTC’s commitments and obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and Related Orders, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and TTC’s policies.

Contractors to ensure appropriate personal protective equipment for the task is available, used and maintained.

Education :

Must be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, supported by a University Degree or College Diploma in Structural Engineering, combined with several years of related experience in a multi-disciplinary design environment where mechanical drawings and specifications are produced and result in built facilities and structures.

  • In-depth knowledge of structural engineering principles, methods and practices for the design and construction of surface and subway transit related buildings, facilities and equipment.
  • Highly proficient at reading drawings and schematics.
  • Must possess at least five (5) years direct experience in Structural Engineering.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of the applicable provincial and national codes, regulations and standards that govern structural and mechanical design for buildings, including but not limited to : Ontario’s Building Code (OBC), National Building Code (NBC), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Fire Code (OFC), American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers Inc.

ASHRAE), American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) / American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Electrical Safety Code ESA and TTC Design Standards.

Strong working knowledge of : Bentley MicroStation or Autodesk AutoCAD, building analysis software, MS Office and other relevant software applications related to the work.

  • Sound judgment and well-developed technical, analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report-writing skills.
  • Fully capable of efficiently and accurately completing projects while overseeing the activities of Engineering Technologists.
