About the Role

Brookfield Renewable Canada is seeking a Project Manager to plan and manage all aspects of battery storage projects, from the late stages of development through construction and handover to operations.

The Project Manager will play a key role as the leader of the project execution team and is expected to be physically on the construction site (near Ottawa) as required during construction.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in renewable energy projects, particularly in battery storage projects and experience on major power projects (renewables, HV substations, transmission lines, 50M$+) with expedited schedules.

The ideal profile has strong organizational, technical, project management and communication skills.

The Project Manager will work closely with other groups and leads from Development, Procurement, Operations, Finance, External Affairs, external EPC firms and contractors, and other internal / external stakeholders to support the procurement, execution, construction, and commissioning of new power generation and storage facilities.

Key Responsibilities

The Project Manager will be accountable for the project success, including :

Leadership : Lead the planning and on-site execution of one of the largest Battery Energy Storage Solutions projects in Canada.

The successful candidate will act as the main Owner's representative on site for the Project between now and COD in 2027.

  • HSE and ESG : Represent and own the strong Health Safety and Environment culture at Brookfield Renewable Canada by ensuring HSE, Social & Governance (ESG) requirements by the Owner are met.
  • Project Management : Overview and ensure the execution of project management, HSE, technical, procurement, permitting, scheduling and contractual tasks required to build the asset in compliance with all contractual specifications, codes, standards and best industry practices, while meeting schedule and budget obligations.
  • Procurement : With the support of the internal procurement, legal, finance and technical teams, coordinate the procurement effort, namely for the EPC, OEM and Major Components contracts in order to maximize value for Brookfield Renewable Canada and control the risks.
  • Technical : With support from Owner’s Engineer and internal technical resources, lead the detailed design review to IFC deliverables and monitor quality and compliance throughout the project.

Accountable for QA / QC and commissioning planning and execution.

  • Communication : Provide leadership and oversight to proficiently manage communications and relationship with local stakeholders (municipality, government entities), EPC, equipment suppliers and subcontractors (OE) to ensure safe and successful execution of major projects.
  • Permitting and Regulatory : Obtain and ensure compliance for all the permits required to build the project
  • Team Management : Overview and supervise a team of project engineers and coordinators affected to the project, supplemented by external support from consultants.

Knowledge and Experience Required

  • Think like an Owner : We are looking for a seasoned Project Manager that will think like an owner and will proactively find creative solutions to solve problems and take ownership of the projects and related tasks, keeping in mind value preservation and creation at all times.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil or electrical preferred), science, or construction management. Alternate combination of suitable education and work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience on major power projects in Canada.
  • Working knowledge of transmission interconnection processes and environmental permitting and regulatory approvals processes.
  • Working knowledge of project stage gating as it pertains to large scale battery energy storage systems and other renewables including utility scale wind and solar developments
  • Working knowledge of geotechnical, civil and constructability criteria for relevant facilities is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of major project contracting strategies and tendering processes.
  • Experience with HV transmission and substation works considered an asset.
  • Experience with HONI and IESO on connecting new asset to the Ontario grid is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years project management experience on construction projects with budgets of at least $50 million, with a track record of delivering projects on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities including experience managing scope, budget, schedule, risk, quality, resources, change, communication, integration, safety and stakeholders, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management tools (charters, execution plans, WBS, schedules, RACI, risk registers, earned value analysis, reporting etc.)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or other project management credentials considered an asset.
  • Effective organizational skills, including the ability to identify priorities and plans work independently while managing competing deadlines;
  • Proven track record of stakeholder engagement (utilities, landowners, First Nations, members of the public).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively lead a team.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain positive interpersonal relationships;
  • Working knowledge of Ontario-based HSE regulations and contract and legal agreement language, specifically pertaining to equipment supply, professional services, and project construction
  • Bilingualism is an asset;
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral, in English and, if possible, in French;
  • Excellent computer skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office products
