In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

This position is part-time salaried 50% FTE and the full-time salary range will be prorated accordingly.

JOB SUMMARY

This position supports the development, planning, delivery and evaluation of cultural and educational programming in the Centre de la Francophonie de UBC and the Department of French, Hispanic & Italian Studies.

It is funded in part by the Ministry of Education on behalf of Heritage Canada, with the aim of providing members of the Province’s French-language minority with the opportunity to be educated in their own language and providing British Columbia residents with the opportunity to learn French as a second language.

To that end, this role furthers the mandate of the Centre, which is to offer UBC students a thriving and sustainable francophone cultural environment on campus.

Major responsibilities also include enriching the FHIS student experience through educational programming supporting curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular development;

building community partnerships; cultivating career pathways; student engagement; recruitment and outreach to grow registrations.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

Reports to and takes direction from the Department Administrator. Takes direction from the Director, Centre de la Francophonie.

This position’s time is split (50 / 50) across the Centre and the Department, with the intention for the Community Engagement Coordinator to create synergies and work as a team with the Student Programs Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, and other administrative staff.

Works in contact with faculty, staff, students and representatives from other departments, as well as community partners.

WORK PERFORMED

Community Partnerships

Establishes and maintains a network of contacts with community members (scholars, artists, public figures, alumni, employers etc.

that support student engagement activities (workshops, lectures, cultural events etc.). Works with the Centre Director and Department Head to invite collaborations.

Facilitates interdepartmental collaboration and communications at UBC (e.g., Arts, Education, Extended Learning).

Responsible for communication content in French and English. Updates the Centre website and social media. Keeps internal and external contacts abreast of initiatives with a communication strategy that includes targeted mailing lists and social media.

Generates reports and pursues funding applications that further the mandates of the Centre and Department.

Liaises with UBC Careers, Arts Co-op, and employers to cultivate careers pathways that leverage FHIS language programs. Works with the instructor of FREN 364 : French at Work to develop experiential learning partnership opportunities.

Student Engagement

Manages initiatives that complements activities and timelines of the Centre, Department and various levels of the University.

Promotes activities and tracks their success in collaboration with the Communication Coordinator.

Manages event implementation and event budgets.

Plans, develops and implements co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that enrich the FHIS student experience and supports the mandate of the CDLF and furthers the FHIS Student Engagement Plan.

Oversees the ACUFC Bursary Program which manages >

$100K of awards per year for students learning French as a Second Language. Promotes funding opportunities for student recruitment such as French for the Future.

Curriculum

Contributes to the Department’s curriculum processes, including identifying areas that require change or development in the area of language-centred community engagement, working with faculty members to create solutions, and overseeing the curriculum change process to ensure all proposals get approved and implemented.

Responsible for the successful implementation of strategic curriculum changes with considerations for the changing breadth requirement and adoption of Workday;

advises faculty and students accordingly.

Collaborates with faculty members and the FHIS Admin Team on academic program development and design, e.g., adjustment to existing majors or minors.

Facilitates the development and implementation of policy around course syllabi as it pertains to community and experiential learning objectives.

Reviews proposals to ensure they contain all required elements, and provides feedback to faculty as needed or requested in consultation with the Associate Heads.

Conducts primary and secondary research, analyzes findings and creates reports on curriculum and program enrolment trends.

Other duties as required.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR / IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Errors could directly affect the ability of FHIS students to complete their degree requirements, as well as affect the overall student experience, negatively impacting the operation of the Centre and Department, as well as their reputation and credibility.

Works independently under the general supervision of the Administrator.

May supervise Work Learn students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent oral and written French and English communication skills. Diplomatic, inter-culturally sensitive, patient, and tactful communicator.

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and one year of related experience. Experience navigating University rules and explaining procedures to students.

Experience with a diverse student population and work environment. Effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrated judgment and decision-making skills.

Ability to draft and edit correspondence and reports. Ability to interpret and implement policies. Experience updating websites and social media.

Information technology skills and demonstrated ability to use spreadsheet software. A working knowledge of the educational system in British Columbia would be an asset.
