The Myhal Centre Fabrication Facility (MYFab) is a space for the community of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering to move ideas from design to prototype.
The facility supports undergraduate courses with technical resources accessible to students 7 days a week to aid in their learning through hands-on physical prototyping.
as well as projects by others across the Faculty. The facility covers a wide range of techniques from traditional fabrication with soft materials (plastic / fabrics / foams / wood / sheet metal) to advanced digital fabrication tools (3D printing / Laser cutting / CNC routing).
Open throughout the year, the facility also supports the Faculty outreach programs, graduate courses and research efforts

The Makerspace Facility Supervisor provides evening and weekend supervision for the administrative functions and resources associated primarily with the day-to-day operation of the Myhal Centre Fabrication Facility located in the 4th Floor of the Myhal Centre and subdivided in three functional areas the :
Light Fabrication Facility (LFF) : is the heart of the fabrication area that include over 20 general use workbenches, here students can access most tools, materials and components available at MYFab.
Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF) : houses most digital fabrication equipment, where students jobs are processed. Includes 20 FDM printers, one laser cutter, a vacuum former and an SLA printer.
At peak demand, we process over 300 jobs a week and around 200Kg of PLA a yea.r
PCB Lab : The newest addition to the facility is a designated lab for population of PCBs, include over 20 soldering stations, 3 automated pick and place machines and 2 reflow ovens.
The incumbent directly supports the academic purpose of both the LFF and the RPF, and serves as a staff resource to the students of the Engineering Society’s clubs and teams including those accommodated in the Myhal Lower Level / Arena.
The incumbent is helpful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the building blocks’ that are available in the Faculty for students to succeed with their design-build projects.
Under the direction of the Senior Facility Supervisor, the Makerspace Facility Supervisor is responsible for the seamless planning and resolution of issues regarding the evening and weekend scheduled use of 4th Floor spaces that are either controlled by the Faculty (MYFab, Project Storage Rooms), the maintenance of a clean, healthy and safe environment in the MYFab, the provision of oversight for the Lower Level spaces allocated for use by the Engineering Society.
Your responsibilities will include :
Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for labs / workshops and the facility including but not limited to :
- Assuring the safe operation of the facility and safety of staff and facility users.
- Supervising staff tasks to guarantee they are preformed to the appropriate standard and in a timely manner.
- Processing invoices and maintaining accurate records of stocks, costs, and charges.o Keeping communications with staff and stakeholders to assure smooth continued operations in the facility.
- Assigning tasks as necessary and prioritizing according to shifting demands.
- Maintaining correspondence with stakeholders.
Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and / or staff on equipment and fabrication techniques.
- Analyzing and recommending suitable materials and methods of approaching fabrication and / or lab work.
- Analyzing applicable installation methods for apparatus and devices.
- Determining technical requirements for fabrication projects.
- Designing, modifying and fabricating custom lab apparatus, tools and jigs.
- Coordinating routine maintenance of equipment.
- Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards.
Essential Qualifications :
- Three-year Electromechanical Engineering Technology program and a member in good standing with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists and / or Professional Engineers Ontario or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A combination of minimum 6 years of related work experience in industry and / or education with skills acquired and developed in industrial automation, robotics, control systems, machining, hydraulics, pneumatics, safety, mechatronics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), automation welding, machine elements and computer-control methods.
- Must hold or be able to obtain a valid St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate or its equivalent.
- Ability to work evening and weekends. ; Flexibility to alter working days and / or hours (day shift) in absence of the Senior Facility Supervisor.
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SolidWorks, Adobe, and AutoCAD.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with diverse populations.
- Ability to decipher mechanical and electrical schematic drawings. ;Ability to use electrical and mechanical diagnostic tools.
- Ability to interpret and develop a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Demonstrated ability to operate and familiarity with safety practices for equipment such as but not limited to 3-D printers, laser cutters, wood shop machines, soldering, etc.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, related Regulations, and WHMIS.
- Analytical ability with the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, area, percentages, circumference, volume and apply concepts of algebra and geometry.

Assets (Nonessential) :
Experience working with student design teams and projects.
Experience supervising unionized staff, dealing with highly dynamic environments and deescalating personal conflicts.
- Experience troubleshooting equipment.
- Broad experience with fabrication techniques and materials including but not limited to : foams, wood, plastics, fabric, thin and soft metals.
- Familiarity with working principlesof digital fabrication tools : 3D printing, Laser cutting, CNC.
- Familiarity with dealing with suppliers.
- Knowledge of electromechanical components used for entry-level robotics.

Work Hours
The evening supervisor regular hours are Monday to Thursday 2 PM to 10 : 15 PM, and Sundays 10 AM to 6 : 15 PM.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone :
USW Pay Band 13 $84,813. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $108,463. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation / Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
