Job description

Join Our Team as Robotics & Mechanical Design Technologist

Robotools Canada is seeking a hands-on Robotics & Mechanical Design Technologist to provide mechanical design and robotics support across our automation projects. This role centers on SolidWorks-based mechanical design, robot cell layout, and hands-on robotics expertise, working closely with our engineering and fabrication teams to design, model, and support the systems we build in-house.

This is an opportunity to work on a wide variety of advanced automation projects, including industrial welding robots, custom robotic material handling cells, autonomous mobile robot (AMR) systems, industrial automation equipment, and prototype R&D platforms. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, the fabrication team, and suppliers to design and support real-world robotic systems.

Why Join Robotools?

  • Work on custom robotic welding systems, AMRs, industrial automation projects, and prototype R&D systems
  • Take ownership of mechanical design work — 3D modeling, assemblies, drawings — for real automation projects
  • Hands-on exposure to industrial robots and cobots, controls, sensors, and advanced automation technologies
  • Opportunity for factory and supplier training in Canada and the USA
  • Small, agile engineering team with broad technical exposure and growth opportunities
  • Varied work spanning mechanical design, robot commissioning support, troubleshooting, and fabrication support
  • Direct involvement in new robotics technologies and real customer applications
  • Opportunity to grow into advanced robotics, mechanical design, or engineering roles

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead SolidWorks mechanical design and 3D modeling for robotic work cells, fixtures, tooling, and custom automation equipment
  • Produce assembly drawings, layouts, and BOMs to support fabrication and integration work
  • Support the design and testing of R&D test equipment and prototype platforms
  • Provide mechanical design support across active robotics and automation projects
  • Apply robotics knowledge (arm kinematics, cell layout, teach pendant programming) to support commissioning and integration
  • Collaborate with the controls/electrical team on cell layouts, safety systems, and cabling design
  • Accurately position and assemble robot cell components from drawings and layouts
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, and structural issues on existing systems
  • Support custom fabrication and prototype assembly activities
  • Maintain design documentation and drawing standards
  • Occasional on-site support for commissioning or troubleshooting, as needed

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Hands-on SolidWorks experience is required — 3D modeling, assemblies, technical drawings, and GD&T
  • Mechanical, mechatronics, or robotics engineering/technology background
  • Solid understanding of robotic arm kinematics and robot cell design
  • Experience with industrial robots or cobots (e.g., Kawasaki, Fairino, or similar) is an asset
  • Ability to read and produce wiring diagrams, schematics, and mechanical drawings
  • Experience designing fixtures, tooling, or custom automation equipment
  • Comfortable using industrial robot teach pendants is an asset
  • Experience with pneumatics and industrial I/O systems is an asset
  • Welding, fabrication, or machining experience is an asset
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to adapt and learn new robotic systems and technologies quickly

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license (for occasional site visits)
  • Ability to lift equipment and work in industrial environments
  • Ability to work safely around industrial equipment and follow safety procedures

Benefits & Perks

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits
  • Opportunities for professional development and training
  • Collaborative and innovative work environment with access to the latest automation technologies
  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Work Location: Delta, BC
  • Compensation: $90,000–$110,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and technical expertise.
