This is a contract position open exclusively to candidates who are located in and legally authorized to provide services in Canada. Applications from candidates located outside of Canada will not be considered.

About Our Company

Kanopi Studios is a Design, Development & Support Agency with a fully distributed team of experts in Drupal & WordPress.

Our clients are mission-driven - and so are we. We design, build, and support websites that help their missions thrive.

We believe the people behind the work matter just as much as the work itself. That’s why we’re deeply committed to supporting our team’s growth, well-being, and success. When our people thrive, our clients do too - and together, we build a web that works better for everyone.

As Kanopi continues to grow, we're looking to engage a Contract Senior Website Content Strategist & Copywriter on a contract basis.

About The Job

Kanopi Studios is seeking a Contract Senior Website Content Strategist & Copywriter who can turn research and data into clear, effective website content experiences.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing content strategy and writing the final copy. They can take a project from discovery and research through strategy, content development and implementation. They should be able to clearly communicate and demonstrate the rationale behind their recommendations to internal and client teams.

Core Accountabilities

Champion User-Centered Content Strategy

  • Be a vocal advocate for user-first content practices within our internal and client teams.
  • Ensure content decisions are rooted in user research, accessibility best practices, and business goals.
  • Guide clients in understanding how content impacts navigation, usability, and conversions.

Craft Strategic, Accessible Copy

  • Write engaging copy that:
    • Aligns to the overall content strategy and project goals.
    • Meets established accessibility standards
    • Is SEO and AEO ready

Lead Content Discovery and Strategy

  • Plan, create, and present a range of deliverables including (but not limited to):
    • Content Audits & Map/Gap Analyses
    • User Journeys, Personas & User Flows
    • Keyword, SEO & AEO Research and Recommendations
    • Content Maps
    • Copy Guidelines, Voice/Tone Frameworks & UX Copywriting
    • Content governance documentation

Contribute to Kanopi's Brand and Sales Presence

  • Support the internal teams by contributing to thought leadership and promotional initiatives such as:
    • Being an active participant and voice for creative services in client pitch meetings
    • Webinars, case studies, and speaking engagements
    • Writing blog posts or participating in video content
    • Representing Kanopi at conferences or industry events

About the Compensation and Work Requirements

This is an independent contractor engagement. Work is project-based, hours will vary, and no minimum hours are guaranteed. Contractors invoice at their contracted hourly rate. The expected hourly rate range for this role is $50 - $70 CAD, depending on experience and skills. Please note the top of this range is firm and non-negotiable.

This is a 100% remote role. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada, reside in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, or the Northwest Territories, and be available for regular collaboration during Pacific Time business hours. We are not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Now, let’s talk about you!

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who have:

Must-Have Experience

  • 5+ years of combined content strategy and copywriting experience at a senior level, ideally within an agency or client services environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective content strategies based on qualitative research, and quantitative data.
  • Demonstrated experience creating engaging copy that meets SEO/AEO needs and conforms to established accessibility standards.
  • Experience working with remote and/or distributed teams.
  • Experience planning and structuring content for large or complex websites.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking, specifically in website content strategy (including content modelling, UX writing, and information architecture (IA) for digital experiences) and strong copywriting samples tied to specific project goals.

Tool Proficiency

  • User research & testing tools (e.g., Userbrain, Optimal Workshop)
  • Heatmap & behavior analytics (e.g., Mouseflow)
  • Analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console)
  • SEO & auditing platforms (e.g., SEMRush, Screaming Frog)
  • Google Workspace and other documentation tools

Skills & Qualities

  • Excellent writing and editing skills with impeccable grammar and attention to detail.
  • Ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible, and engaging content.
  • A strategic mindset with an eye for balancing business objectives with user needs.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, especially in client-facing contexts.
  • Solid understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive content practices (e.g., WCAG).
  • Comfortable juggling multiple projects and adapting quickly to shifting priorities.

What This Role Is Not

This role goes beyond copywriting and requires experience in content strategy. It is not focused on social media, marketing funnels, or ad campaigns. Instead, it centres on planning, structuring and maintaining website content to create clear, useful, accessible and consistent user experiences. The ideal candidate can solve complex content problems, shape content systems and work closely with design and implementation teams.

Studies show that some candidates, particularly women and people from underrepresented communities, only apply for a job when they meet every listed qualification. If you're excited about this role but your experience doesn't line up perfectly with every point above, we'd still love to hear from you.
