Job description

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Plant Operations, as well as to the Director of Health, Safety & Environment, the Manager / Senior Manager of Health, Safety & Environment will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety and environmental protection strategies across our manufacturing operations in Ontario.

Key Responsibilities :

Strategic Safety Management

  • Lead a team of HSE professionals to promote a safety-first culture within the manufacturing operations.
  • Support and implement HSE strategies that align with organizational manufacturing goals and industry best practices.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining safety policies and procedures for manufacturing environments.
  • Support the development of key performance indicators (KPIs) for safety and environmental management.
  • Contribute to safety initiatives to :
  • Help maintain lower-than-average Total Recordable Incident Rates (TRIR)
  • Support the goal of zero workplace incidents
  • Uphold high standards of integrity in health and safety management
  • Assist in implementing proactive risk mitigation strategies.
  • Support and collaborate with the HSE leadership team.

Manufacturing Safety Management

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety protocols for manufacturing facilities.
  • Conduct frequent safety inspections and internal safety audits.
  • Create site-specific safety plans for manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Manage and deliver safety training programs tailored to manufacturing workforce needs.
  • Implement equipment safety, machine guarding, and hazardous material handling protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and other relevant manufacturing safety regulations.
  • Environmental Compliance

  • Support environmental impact assessments for manufacturing projects.
  • Assist in developing sustainability initiatives and green manufacturing practices.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA regulations and environmental protection standards.
  • Monitor and help reduce environmental footprint across manufacturing operations.
  • Support waste management, emissions control, and resource conservation efforts.
  • Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain current knowledge of local, provincial, and federal safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist in preparing for and supporting regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Manage safety reporting and incident investigation processes.
  • Training and Development

  • Design and implement safety training programs for manufacturing personnel.
  • Conduct regular safety workshops and awareness sessions.
  • Develop emergency response and crisis management protocols for manufacturing environments.
  • Foster a culture of safety awareness across manufacturing operations.
  • Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
  • Professional certifications such as CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) is required.
  • Required Experience

  • 5-7 years of safety management experience in manufacturing environments.
  • Proven track record of supporting and implementing comprehensive HSE programs.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing safety best practices.
  • Key Skills

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing safety regulations and environmental compliance.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Analytical approach to safety management.
  • Problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in safety management software and reporting tools.
  • Technical Competencies

  • Thorough understanding of OSHA manufacturing safety regulations.
  • Risk assessment and management techniques.
  • Environmental impact evaluation.
  • Safety training and development.
  • Incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Regulatory compliance strategies.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to visit and inspect manufacturing facilities in the Niagara region as well as the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Capable of wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to move around production areas and perform safety inspections.
  • Occasional travel will be required.
