Detailed Overview

Commensurate with their level of education, training and in accordance with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia (CPBC) standards of practice and Pharmacy departmental policies, procedures and competency guidelines, the Employed Student Pharmacist provides drug distribution, basic drug information, medication reconciliation, medication dosage adjustments and assists Clinical Pharmacists with direct patient care activities including preparation for multidisciplinary rounds, educational seminars, drug therapy reviews and patient drug therapy counseling. Responsibilities Dispenses medications in compliance with applicable legislation and regulations, ensures appropriate medication therapy based on readily available information, validates prescriptions using primary drug information texts and withholds medication until safety concerns are resolved. Contacts prescriber, patient/client and/or healthcare team member for prescription clarification, problem resolution; reviews with Registered Pharmacist and implements resolves and documents outcome of interaction with prescriber in the patient/client health care record as directed by the Registered Pharmacist. Prepares medications, which may include parenteral therapy and I.V. admixture solutions, for checking and dispensing in accordance with established procedures. Assists in monitoring basic drug therapies for safe, effective and appropriate use by referencing standard compendia, literature and patient/client demographics, interpreting lab data to guide individualization of therapy; reports any issues or concerns and makes recommendations for changes to the Registered Pharmacist for follow up. Provides appropriate reference material information on basic drug therapies verbally and/or in writing to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. Assists with medication reconciliation by obtaining appropriate reference material information and observing or participating in drug therapy counseling with patients/clients. Assists with direct patient care activities such as preparation for multidisciplinary rounds, educational seminars and drug therapy reviews. Participates in drug use evaluation by assisting with the collection, tabulation and analyzing of data on drug use. Participates and assists in inventory control and cost accounting systems for all drugs including prescription, ward stock, admixtures, narcotics, controlled and investigational drugs. Works in collaboration with Pharmacy Technicians in relation to drug distribution services. Participates in quality assurance systems relating to drug distribution patient/client care activities, such as the conduct of nursing unit reviews and checking and documenting all dispensing, labeling, pre-packaging and manufacturing operations performed by technicians. Assists with orientations, and participates in demonstrations and in-service educational programs for department staff, students and other health care personnel as assigned. Participates in research projects and clinical drug trials as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Current student registration with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia (CPBC). Successful completion of Year Two or Year Three of a Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree, and proof of continued enrollment in a recognized Canadian University Faculty of Pharmacy. Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations, such as the Food and Drugs, Controlled Drugs and Substances, Narcotics Control, Benzodiazepines and Other Targeted Substances. Ability to organize and prioritize work. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work independently and as part of the multidisciplinary health care team. Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal and professional working relationships with patients/clients and staff. Ability to exercise tact, good judgment. Ability to foster and promote good public relations. Ability to physically carry out the duties of the position. Ability to operate related equipment, including a computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
