Barrister & Solicitor at Martin & Hillyer Associates

Full Time Personal Injury Law Clerk

Martin & Hillyer Associates, one of Ontario’s pre-eminent law firms located in Burlington for over 50 years, has an opening for a Full Time Law Clerk , assisting Laura Hillyer and James Page . The successful applicant must have a minimum of 5 years of experience and have experience in Civil Litigation, Personal Injury and Accidents Benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities include :

  • Draft pleadings, settlement / mediation and pre-trial briefs for lawyer review
  • Prepare various court documents, motion materials and applications as required before the Superior Court and Licence Appeals Tribunal
  • Prepare for and attend at trial
  • Oversee day-to-day management of files
  • Prepare Affidavit of Documents, undertaking charts, answer undertakings given at discovery
  • Review files re status and moving forward
  • Answer undertakings given at discovery
  • Liaise with client / lawyer inquiries via telephone and email
  • Deal with all aspects of Tort and AB-side of all files
  • Preparation of Bills of Costs, client disbursement lists and client accounts
  • Processing mail, faxes, photocopying, emailing and occasional reception coverage is required
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidate must :

  • Have knowledge of legal principles and practices through education and related experience
  • Have software knowledge of MS-Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Outlook and PC Law
  • Software knowledge of Filevine would be an asset
  • Possess the interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively communicate and empathize with clients, lawyers and staff
  • Be a self starter who is capable of working both independently and as part of a group
  • Be motivated and highly organized, with the ability to prioritize
  • Possess the ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Be able to work extended hours when necessary
  • Compensation :

    Competitive Salary plus Benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
