Your Role

Clarius Mobile Health is looking for an Embedded Firmware Engineer to contribute to a special project focused on expanding access to ultrasound technology while advancing our next-generation innovations. Over the next 24 months, you'll develop and debug FPGA firmware and embedded software for handheld medical ultrasound devices. You'll work closely with our algorithm team to implement and port firmware IP across custom hardware platforms, helping to create a functional prototype without compromising quality.

Responsibilities include writing efficient, testable code, integrating firmware/software into hardware designs, developing verification plans, and ensuring compliance with project plans and industry standards. You'll work in a collaborative engineering environment.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and debug embedded software for handheld medical ultrasound devices
  • Develop and debug FPGA firmware for handheld medical ultrasound devices
  • Integrate MCU, MPU, and FPGA subsystems into a cohesive system, bringing up interfaces between firmware, HDL, and the embedded Linux/Ubuntu software stack
  • Write well designed, testable, efficient code
  • Produce specifications and determine operational feasibility
  • Integrate firmware/software components into both new and established hardware designs
  • Develop verification plans and quality assurance procedures
  • Document and maintain functionality
  • Comply with project plans and industry standards

Your Experience So Far:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical/ computer engineering or computer science
  • 3–5 years of embedded firmware development experience spanning MCU, MPU, and FPGA/VHDL, with a strong emphasis on system integration
  • Experience with Xilinx FPGA technologies and embedded Linux development, including the application/software side on Ubuntu (build, packaging, and system-level integration)
  • Experience developing within the Vivado software development environment (HLS development experience is an asset)
  • Strong MCU (baremetal and RTOS) and MPU development experience, including bring-up, driver/BSP work, and inter-processor communication
  • Experience developing for MPSoC Ultrascale+ and STM32 product family
  • Hands-on experience in debugging FPGA firmware using software, hardware logic analyzers and Oscilloscope
  • Ability to read circuit schematic related to MPU, FPGA, and MCU hardware
  • Ability to write C/C++ software for testing and for integration with firmware
  • Strong interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills in English
  • Attention to detail and the ability to produce efficient documentation
  • Familiarity with software development methodology and release processes
  • Proficiency with modern AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate coding, debugging, and documentation
  • Knowledge of following standards: IEC 62304, ISO 14971, IEC 60601, and ISO 13485 is favorable but not mandatory.

Location and Compensation:

Due to the hands-on nature of this role, you will be required to work on-site for the majority of the first 4-6 months of the contract. A hybrid arrangement may be considered thereafter. As a result, we can only consider candidates who are within a commutable distance of our Vancouver, BC office.

This is a two-year fixed-term contract with a strong likelihood of extension upon meeting project deliverables. The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $120,000.

More Reasons to Consider:

Be Part of a High-Impact Project – You’ll play a key role in creating a more affordable ultrasound solution, making medical imaging more accessible worldwide.

Workspace: Our modern office features sit/stand desks, various health & wellness facilities, a stocked kitchen, outdoor amenities, on-site daycare, enclosed parking, a free on-site gym and close proximity to a SkyTrain station.
