Matchbox Consulting Group is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer for one of BC's foremost leading electrical utilities provider for their Transmissions Stations Electrical Design Team based in a HYBRID position in their Burnaby office. This role requires experience designing transmission utility substations with operating voltages from 12 kV to 500 kV and working with utility design solutions in an electric utility environment.

What you'll do

The Transmission Stations Engineering Division provides engineering services and expertise for the design of electric utility substations, including civil, electrical, fire protection, mechanical, and structural components. The division is responsible for specifying, evaluating, and acquiring major electrical equipment, supporting construction, and providing engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, and oversight of work done by engineering service partners.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Engage in the engineering of electrical utility systems and develop specialized expertise in design engineering as a professional engineer.

  • Analyze and resolve engineering problems with considerable independence.

  • Manage small to medium-sized projects and work packages, including writing specifications and standards, estimating capital costs, leading and mentoring technical staff, and providing technical and site support during installation and commissioning of electrical equipment.

  • Review work of the project team, consultants, and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practices.

  • Impart engineering knowledge and encourage professional development of engineers.

  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to determine priorities, assess impact, and resolve issues.

  • Work independently and provide technical leadership in electrical design fields, mentoring junior engineers and Engineers-in-Training (EITs).

What you bring

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably power engineering) recognized by Canadian universities.

  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in relevant engineering fields.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal, technical writing, analytical, interpersonal, presentation).

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Technical knowledge and experience:

  • Electrical design of transmission utility substations operating at 12 kV to 500 kV.

  • Major electrical equipment: transformers, capacitors, reactors, disconnect switches, circuit breakers, FACTS devices (SVC, STATCOM), and energy storage technologies (BESS, Hydrogen).

  • Electrical, mechanical, civil, P&C, and operational requirements of substation components.

  • Power system planning, system operation, protection & control engineering, and project management.

  • Ability to investigate, analyze, and solve engineering problems.

  • Ability to provide technical direction to junior engineers and manage design tasks including scope, schedule, and cost.

  • Experience with substations, BC standards, national (CSA, ULC) and international (IEEE, IEC) electrical standards.

  • Experience with design software for grounding studies, lightning studies, and bus design.

  • Experience with outdoor construction and steel assembly.

  • CAD skills, particularly 3-D modeling using Autodesk products (AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault).

  • Interest and ability to develop technical expertise through on-the-job training.

What they offer

  • Comprehensive benefits package

  • Minimum of 15 paid vacation days

  • Lifetime pension

  • Flexible work model depending on role type

  • Training and development courses

What else you should know

  • Full-Time Regular Position.

  • Hybrid role, but successful candidate will work from the office for a pre-specified number of days (details discussed during recruitment).

  • Applicants with lesser qualifications or experience may be considered for a lower-level position.

  • Occasional travel within the province may be required.

  • Must maintain Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.
