McMaster University in conjunction with Hamilton Health Sciences are seeking two (2) full-time academic physicians to join the Division of Pediatric Palliative Care and provide care at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH).

About Us :

McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) is a globally renowned pediatric hospital dedicated to children’s health delivering excellence in clinical care, child health research, and education. It is home to some of the country’s most respected pediatric care programs, including Canada’s largest NICU and the largest prosthetic and orthotics facility of its kind. MCH also houses one of Ontario’s fastest-growing pediatric emergency departments, the largest inpatient child and youth mental health unit, and more. MCH is undergoing the most significant expansion in its history, fueled by a landmark provincial investment to expand critical services, add top-tier clinicians, and improve access to cutting-edge pediatric care for families across Ontario.

McMaster University is consistently ranked among Canada’s most research-intensive universities, housing 70 research centers and more than 100 research chairs. McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) is the birthplace of problem-based learning and evidence-based medicine and is a global leader in health education and research. FHS combines healthcare disciplines under one Faculty in an interprofessional, interdisciplinary model which encourages innovation and collaboration, preparing healthcare learners and researchers for future practice. At the core of this training is our strong relationships with our academic hospital partners : Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

The Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University is a dynamic and growing community of over 200 pediatric specialists, sub-specialists, scientists, educators, and learners, all united by a shared mission : to improve the wellbeing of children and their families through exceptional patient-centered care, transformative research, and groundbreaking education. Our faculty are leaders in their fields—holding prestigious Canada Research Chairs, national teaching awards, and honoured as members of the Order of Canada. At McMaster, you will work alongside some of the most innovative minds in child health, driven by our core values of compassion, collaboration, excellence, and innovation. We are deeply committed to fostering a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

This program serves as the regional hub of pediatric palliative care expertise for Southcentral Ontario, providing 24 / 7 direct and indirect clinical care in hospital and community settings, offering cross-disciplinary education and training opportunities, conducting innovative research, and contributing to leadership at regional, provincial, national, and international levels. In partnership with the Kemp Care Network, the program will also provide clinical care in a new pediatric hospice facility, anticipated opening in late 2026. The successful candidates will be clinician educators and share responsibility for education, research, and administration in their division.

Position Requirements :

This position will incorporate an academic appointment. Salary will align with the Dept of Pediatric Practice Plans and rank will be commensurate with the experience of the applicant. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the qualities of a pediatric palliative medicine specialist including a patient- and family-centred and values-based approach to care; intensive interdisciplinary collaboration; and expertise in pain and symptom management, compassionate communication, anticipatory care planning, conflict resolution, applied pediatric ethics, end-of-life care, and child and family grief and bereavement. We find strength through diversity and as a program in evolution, experience with and perspectives from varied pediatric palliative care delivery models is an invaluable asset, as is clinical experience in a pediatric hospice facility.

These positions will incorporate a full-time academic appointment. The Division of Pediatric Palliative Care currently consists of three (3) faculty members with a wide range of clinical, academic, and research interests. We offer a collegial atmosphere, a unique academic environment, many research opportunities and the opportunity to work in a growing academic department with enthusiastic colleagues.

The ideal candidate will have the following requirements :

  • Have completed subspecialty training in Pediatric Palliative Medicine (or equivalent experience in tertiary pediatric palliative care).
  • Applicants should be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada ideally in both Pediatrics and Palliative Medicine (or equivalent experience in tertiary pediatric Palliative Care) and must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the Province of Ontario.
  • Demonstrate a passion for ensuring equitable access to high-quality, interdisciplinary pediatric palliative care for all children in need, across all care settings and phases of illness.
  • Have a vision for an academic career in pediatric palliative medicine including demonstrated productivity in the field through education, research, advocacy, or administration.
  • Candidates with equivalent credentials in other jurisdictions are encouraged to apply
  • For one of the two positions, we will place high priority on candidates with at least 5 years’ clinical experience working in a tertiary pediatric palliative care program.

An up-to-date curriculum vitae and cover letter / letter of intent (please ensure you include your current citizenship status as noted below).

Names and contact information of three professional referees; letters of reference are not required and will not be reviewed at the application stage; letters of recommendation from referees will be requested at later stages of the search process.

A brief statement describing any contributions made or planned in relation to : advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, inclusive excellence in teaching, and research; service within higher education, community-based or other professional settings (2-page maximum)
