Payroll Advisor

Edmonton, Alberta

Permanent, Full-Time

People are at the heart of everything we do.

If you value service, care, excellence, trust and fairness, you’ll fit right in. You'll play an important role in making a difference that creates a safer, healthier and stronger Alberta by putting people first. We work together every day to help minimize the impact of workplace injuries and illnesses on Alberta workers and employers.

As the independent operator and administrator of the province’s Workers’ Compensation Act, WCB-Alberta provides protection for over two million workers and nearly 200,000 Alberta employers. Our employees are inspired to make a positive impact on the lives of injured workers and businesses throughout the province.

How you’ll make a difference:

Reporting to the Manager, Total Compensation, the Payroll Advisor is a trusted payroll professional responsible for delivering accurate, timely, and compliant payroll services for the organization. This role oversees all payroll operations, ensuring employees, government agencies, and benefit providers receive accurate payments in accordance with organizational policies and applicable federal and provincial legislation.

As a senior payroll subject matter expert, you will provide guidance on payroll, benefits, pension administration, and legislative compliance while helping to drive continuous improvement in payroll processes and systems. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who enjoys solving complex problems, working collaboratively, and contributing to a high-performing team.

Your responsibilities:

  • Manage the end-to-end processing of monthly payroll, including mid-month advances, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and legislative compliance.

  • Administer and maintain payroll-related data within the Workday HCM system.

  • Perform monthly analysis and reconciliation of salary and benefit expense accounts to the General Ledger.

  • Prepare and distribute payroll and salary reports, responding to questions and resolving discrepancies as needed.

  • Review payroll audits, analyze payroll output, and recommend improvements to strengthen controls and processes.

  • Reconcile and adjust monthly reports related to termination benefits and severance accruals.

  • Research and resolve payroll inquiries from employees, internal stakeholders, government agencies, and external partners.

  • Administer the Public Service Pension Plan (PSPP) and Management Employees Pension Plan (MEPP), including processing documentation, preparing monthly remittances, pension adjustments, reconciliations, and reports required by Alberta Pensions Services.

  • Partner with payroll service providers to identify system enhancements, coordinate upgrades, and support continuous improvement initiatives for Workday HCM.

  • Develop, maintain, and regularly update the Payroll Business Continuity Plan.

  • Calculate and process ad hoc payroll payments as required.

  • Prepare payroll summaries and management reports, including year-end salary disclosure information for the Annual Report.

  • Coordinate the preparation, reconciliation, and submission of annual tax reporting, including T4s, T4As, and other required filings.

  • Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.

Your experience and skills:

  • Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) designation from the National Payroll Institute.

  • A minimum of five to seven years of progressive payroll experience in a senior or lead role, preferably supporting an organization with more than 1,000 employees.

  • Extensive experience administering payroll, employee benefits, and defined benefit pension plans. Experience with PSPP, MEPP, or LAPP is considered an asset.

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, employment standards, payroll taxation, and pension administration.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and strong payroll systems experience. Experience with Workday HCM is highly desirable.

  • Exceptional analytical skills with strong mathematical aptitude and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex payroll issues, identify solutions, and implement process improvements.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet critical deadlines.

  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with professionalism and discretion to manage confidential and sensitive information.

  • Proven ability to deliver exceptional customer service while building positive relationships with employees, leaders, and external stakeholders.

What we offer:

We offer a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, flexible work schedules and hybrid work opportunities (combination of work from physical office and primary home residence) that foster a healthy work-life balance. Take the next great step in your career and help us change lives. For more information, please see our Employee Handbook

Salary: $85,182 to $100,174 per annum (Salary Grade 11)

Successful candidate must reside in Alberta and be able to work in person from our Edmonton downtown office as required. Final candidates are required to undergo a security clearance as a condition of employment.

We are committed to providing equal opportunity to all qualified people, without regard to race, colour, religion or national origin, gender (or gender identity or expression), age, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability. Equal opportunity is provided in employment, promotions and wages.

Closing Date: July 29, 2026
