Position Summary
BCIT’s Information Technology Services department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Manager, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence . This position establishes and implements a corporate data model, data management, data governance, data warehousing and architecture programs for the Institute in alignment with the organizational priorities, plans, goals and strategic decision making. Oversees the Institute’s operational reporting systems, including IBM Cognos, IBM TM1, and Millennium FAST Reports and associated Oracle and Microsoft SQL databases. Leads the development and governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives across the Institute ensuring ethical, transparent, and responsible use of AI technologies are in alignment with institutional goals and regulatory standards.
Key Accountabilities
- Participates as a member of the Enterprise Application Services leadership team, contributing to the development and implementation of the ITS strategic plan, business and operational plans, and sharing responsibility for achievements and success.
- Establishes and manages the implementation of a corporate data modelling and data management program to support and align with organizational goals, requirements and business operations.
- Manages the operational reporting platforms (IBM Cognos, IBM TM1, Millennium FAST Reports), ensuring their effective use in supporting business intelligence, financial planning, and institutional reporting. Manages the lifecycle of reporting database systems (Oracle, MSSQL) including installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and decommissioning to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Generates data science initiatives to solve complex business problems and develops plans for data warehousing solutions to support business intelligence and ensuring efficient data storage, retrieval, and processing.
- Promotes data analytics initiatives that align with business and user needs. Influences and manages the architecting, development and deployment of data related initiatives, including data transformation scripts, data lakes / warehouses and data analytic dashboards.
- Defines, creates and manages the implementation of best practice data governance practices, standards, policies and procedures for use across the Institute.
- Collaborates with all areas of the Institute to facilitate greater utilization of data by establishing definitions and system structures for robust reporting requirements while upholding the integrity of data, data governance and consistency in practice. Ensures data and AI governance, ethics, practices and information security meets the strictest of standards, fairness, transparency, accountability and is adhered to for data protection, responsible use, privacy and related laws and regulations.
- Leads the design, development, and deployment of AI solutions to support institutional priorities. Translates business needs into AI solutions and communicates technical concepts to non-technical partners. Monitors AI models for performance, bias, and compliance with privacy and regulatory standards.
- Collaborates with academic, administrative, and technical teams to identify opportunities for AI driven innovation and automation to advance data architecture, analytics and robust reporting.
- Plans and incorporates new and innovative technologies for database infrastructures and advancements; manages the development and adherence of comprehensive database security policies and protocols to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access and breaches.
- Stays current and keeps pace with evolving technology and platforms in the data science and analytical landscape.
- Manages staff, overseeing and participating in selection, coaching, mentoring, development, performance management and other people-management practices.
