Position Status : Two (2) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for two (2) full-time, temporary Summer Art Collective Assistants. These are summer term positions with an end date of August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Associate Director – Métis Arts Collective, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to the operations and events of the Métis Arts Collective, and the sales of arts and crafts. The Summer Art Collective Assistant must have excellent communication and organizational skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing and hosting art events, workshops, and community gatherings, ensuring smooth operations and participant engagement.
  • Assist in retail space management, including inventory management, sales transactions, and providing excellent customer service to visitors.
  • Help with the setup and teardown of art displays, prepare materials for art sessions, and arrange merchandise to attract customers.
  • Support the mandate of the Arts Collective to uplift, advocate for, and support Métis artists and to propel Métis art into the mainstream arts ecosystem.
  • Engage with community members and visitors, providing information about the art collective, Métis culture, and upcoming events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including service providers, internal Otipemisiwak Métis Government departments, affiliates, and community.
  • Handle administrative duties such as maintaining records, managing correspondence, updating social media platforms, and documenting activities for reporting purposes.
  • Support the artist catalogue by collecting, updating, and reviewing information.
  • Prepare and distribute correspondence in relation to the operations of the Art Collective.
  • Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette and strong public speaking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
  • Ability to produce professional reports, documents, and presentations.
  • Political and cultural sensitivity.
  • Proficient computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office applications, Adobe, and Google Workspace.
  • Flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.
  • Qualifications

  • Obtained or pursuing a post-secondary education in Arts, Arts Administration, Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, or related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.
  • 1-2 years of retail experience.
  • Experience with event planning and / or workshops is an asset. School or volunteer experience is valid experience.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
  • Other Requirements

  • Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8 : 30 am – 4 : 30 pm.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.
  • Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
