This field-based role is ideal for a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic who values the freedom to work independently from a company-provided service truck. You’ll diagnose, repair, and maintain some of the largest, most advanced equipment in the industry. If you’re safety-focused, resourceful, and take pride in owning your work from start to finish, this role offers real autonomy while being backed by the largest Komatsu dealer in North America.

Base Wage: $54.82 per hour (with an increase to $57.43 after 1 year of continuous service). Additional premiums and allowances may apply.
Location: Lethbridge, AB and surrounding area.
The home branch for this role is Calgary, AB.
Schedule: 5x2

What You’ll Do

  • Perform assemblies, preventative maintenance, repairs, and complete overhauls on heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized or other testing equipment to determine the extent of repair required.
  • Make recommendations regarding extent of repairs and suggest methods of improvement.
  • Interpret work orders and technical manuals.
  • Complete job-specific reports and paperwork as needed.
  • Work safely in challenging environments, including confined spaces, lifting up to 50 lbs., and remote work in adverse weather conditions.

What You Bring

The successful candidate will have certification as Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician. Other requirements include:

  • Commitment to safety and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment; Komatsu experience is an asset.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with comfort interacting directly with customers and on-site contacts.
  • Valid Class 5/G driver’s license.
  • Experience with warranty processes and documenting repairs is an asset.
  • Interprovincial Red Seal is an asset.

This position is classified as an Individual Contributor role in SMS Equipment’s competency framework, requiring demonstration of core competencies (customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise).

At SMS Equipment, safety is one of our core values and we care for each other, without exception. Our successful candidate is intrinsically motivated and committed to making safe choices when completing all tasks.

Pre-Employment

This position is safety sensitive. Candidates may be required to complete:

  • Ticket verification
  • Pre-employment medical questionnaire
  • Drug and alcohol test
  • 5-year commercial driver’s abstract

This posting is for an existing vacancy within SMS Equipment. Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is hired.
