Hours : 35 hours per week
Shift : 5 days per week, varied shift hours

End Date : October 2026
Salary : $18.50 - $20.04 per hour
Reports To : Head of Food Services and 1st Cooks
Nature & Scope
Kitchen Assistants are responsible for washing dishes, maintaining cleanliness of the dish room, hobart, and dining hall. Supporting cleanliness of prep hall, food storage areas and kitchen equipment. Assisting with general food preparation, meal set up / take down, and service support for multiple high volume meals
Camp Elphinstone :
YMCA Camp Elphinstone, located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. Nestled on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound, the camp offers a variety of programs for youth ages 5-17 during July and August. These include one- and two-week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, multi-day paddling and hiking trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone functions as an Outdoor Education, Event, and Retreat Centre, hosting schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Annually, the camp serves over 10,000 participants.
YMCA Camp Elphinstone can accommodate and dine up to 472 campers or guests. During July and August, the camp employs around 140 staff and volunteers, while the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons see a team of 20-50 members. In the winter season, a smaller core team of 10 staff members is maintained. Successful staff at Camp Elphinstone are self-motivated individuals dedicated to helping children and youth thrive in an outdoor camp setting, and they are committed to providing 5-star customer service to all client groups.
Major Responsibilities- in this position, you will :
- Washing service / kitchen dishes not limited to; pots, pans, plates, cups, cutlery, pots and pans on a daily basis
- Responsible for maintaining and up holding an organized, clean dish room to the food safety, health, and food services managers expectations
- Proper garbage and recycling removal of all designated kitchen areas
- Maintaining an organized, clean, and safe space in outer kitchen service areas- All Buffet stations, snack bar, and coffee areas
- Assist with general food preparation as needed
- Assist with serving of meals and interact with participants in a polite and “Y way” manor
- Making sure weekly and daily cleaning tasks and checklists are completed
- Ensure FoodSafe standards are followed at all times
- Ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards / policies / procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff
- Other duties as assigned by 1st Cooks and Food Services Manager
