About Us

The Labour Standards team is responsible for the Labour Standards Code and related regulations, which set out the basic rights and responsibilities of provincially regulated employers and workers in Nova Scotia.

The legislation also establishes a licensing and registration framework to protect vulnerable foreign workers recruited for employment in Nova Scotia.

We help people understand and comply with our legislation and provide a fair, accessible and responsive dispute resolution system.

About Our Opportunity

As an Information and Early Resolution Officer you will be responsible for providing the public with information about the Code and regulations.

You will assist in processing recruiter licence and employer registration applications. As well, you will support the division’s audit and complaint resolution functions.

This position reports to the Manager, Foreign Worker Program.

Primary Accountabilities

In this role you will :

  • Respond to a high volume of phone and email inquiries, ensuring clear, accurate and consistent information is provided about our legislation and complaint process.
  • Process recruiter licence and employer registration applications in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Administer self-audits to assess employers’ compliance with the legislation.
  • Perform data entry and other administrative functions in relation to the licensing and registration process.
  • Facilitate early resolution of complaints, which involves discussing the complaint with the parties and exploring whether the matter can be resolved without an investigation.

Qualifications and Experience

You have grade 11 plus five years of related experience in an office or professional environment. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

You have good interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to explain complex information in a way that people can easily understand.

You have experience dealing with frustrated and upset individuals and can deescalate situations by seeking to understand others’ perspectives, showing empathy, and remaining calm and respectful.

You demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

You are conscientious about and accurate with your work and have well developed time management and organizational skills to effectively manage competing priorities in a busy work environment.

You are comfortable using Microsoft applications including Excel and Outlook and effectively use these tools to help you work more efficiently.

You are a critical thinker and problem solver who takes initiative to identify opportunities to improve the way things are done.

You consistently maintain a respectful, professional, and courteous manner with colleagues and clients. You are flexible and adaptable and demonstrate a willingness to take on any task required to help the team provide timely quality service to the public.

Assets for this role include :

  • Multilingual (verbal and written).
  • Experience applying policies / legislation / regulations.

This is a TERM employment opportunity with anticipated end date of March 31, 2025 . The appointment status ( term’, temporary’ or casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade : CL 22

Salary Range : $1,934.21 - $2,139.34 Bi-Weekly
