Job Summary

Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site in Ontario (Ottawa, Toronto or Brampton) and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities.

Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Associate Director, Learning and Development to join our dynamic Talent Strategy team in our People, Culture and Performance division.

The Talent Strategy team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by leading the processes to prepare the workforce for the future and to support the effectiveness of the division.

In this role, you will be the learning and development practice lead, defining and executing our leadership and employee development strategies and programs to meet current and future organizational needs.

To be successful in this role, you will require a blend of strategic thinking, leadership, and hands-on management to ensure the continuous development of our workforce.

Formula for success

  • Drawing on your knowledge and demonstrated expertise, you will develop and implement the organization’s learning and development strategy.
  • Utilizing your expert knowledge of current industry trends, theories, models, and best practices, you will identify industry and market trends and opportunities to expand the practice of learning and development.
  • Leveraging your continuous growth mindset, adaptability and innovation, you will assess the current maturity of the program and develop a roadmap to improve organizational capability across all dimensions, including upskilling skills, processes, program offerings, use of technology and team effectiveness.
  • Concentrating on your proven experience in developing and executing successful learning and development strategies, you will create and / or curate and deploy training programs, including leadership development, employee development and soft skills training.

You will ensure that a full range of learning methods such as e-learning, workshops, on-the-job training, and coaching are deployed to enhance program effectiveness across the full range of learning needs and organizational contexts.

  • Using your excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, you will provide direct coaching and mentorship to high-potential employees and senior leaders as needed.
  • Focusing on your demonstrated ability to analyze data and drive decision-making based on insights, you will provide regular reports to senior management on the outcomes and ROI and ROE (return on expectations) of learning initiatives.
  • Harnessing your ability to lead and work collaboratively across a diverse team, you will lead and develop a team of learning and development professionals, providing guidance and professional development opportunities.
  • Applying on your strong strategic thinking and planning skills, you will articulate the change pathway required to ensure that each employee has the opportunity to learn and grow, and to ensure that all leaders understand their role and obligations relating to development at CBS.

Desired education and skills

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in a relevant topic, for example education, Organizational Development, Human Resources or a related field (master’s degree is preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience, with most of that in learning and development, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing successful learning and development strategies.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design, and diverse learning delivery methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and drive decision-making based on insights.
  • Experience in managing budgets and vendor relationships.
  • Coaching certification or relevant coaching experience will be considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

What you can expect

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time / 2 days of the week.
  • You may be required to travel to Ottawa once or twice per year, and as required.
