Job Description

The MRF Recovered Materials Technician is responsible for three separate but related functions, namely sorting, auditing and ensuring that Recovered Materials meet End Market Specifications.

Key responsibilities :

  • Understands and promotes the Company’s, the Division’s, the Plant’s, and the Department’s mission statement, values, and strategic goals.
  • Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
  • Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other Company departments and staff.

Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.

  • Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a product that is processed to the highest standard achievable.
  • Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Understands, complies with, and is accountable for adherence to COR quality standards in all activities.
  • Manages assigned work station / tasks within scope of responsibility so all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and operational targets are achieved.
  • Safely and efficiently operates all assigned (both as primary as well as for relief coverage) unit equipment and process(es) as outlined in the applicable SOP syllabus.
  • Advises Supervisor and manager when production targets will not be met and provide explanation of shortfalls and actively participate in the development of productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Conducts maintenance checks on equipment.
  • Maintains a high-level of cleanliness within the assigned Unit(s) as instructed.
  • Diligently works on and completes assigned training plan and achieves competency for all aspects of the assigned Unit(s) within agreed-upon timelines.

Continually works to enhance operational skills. With prior approval and when opportunities exist, commences training in other Units of the plant.

  • Coordinates and performs composition audits of the recyclable material that is delivered to the MRF and processed at the MRF, the material at various points throughout the MRF processing line, material that is destined for disposal and commodities that are prepared for sale to recycling markets.
  • Communicates with the Production department and the Marketing team
  • Clean equipment when assigned. May be required to work at heights and / or in confined spaces using hand tools to clean equipment.
  • Seeks opportunities to simplify and improve work methods and presents them to Supervisor / Manager for approval.
  • Participates in the development of strategies to improve productivity, lower downtime and operating costs, and add value to the MRF.
  • Provides training and mentoring of other team members and personnel as assigned.
  • Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • No prior sorting or automated production line experience is required, however is preferred.
  • Minimum of six (6) months’ quality control auditing and / or industrial equipment experience, or combination of demonstrated experience, aptitude, and specific skills training.
  • Experience in providing technical and soft skill training in a diverse workplace is a definite asset.
  • Preference for post-secondary education in a technical discipline or a combination of demonstrated similar work experience and aptitude
  • Ability to work at a stationary or moving conveyor line sorting product while meeting target expectations.
  • Ability to be attentive to details to meet safety and quality standards
  • Effective English language communication skills to verbally communicate, understand, comprehend, and comply with all job requirements
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to work 8-hour / 10-hour shifts, either day or evening, as currently, the facility operates up to 17 hours per day, 7 days per week;

must have reliable means of transportation to / from work location Edmonton Waste Management Center (MRF, Site 600)

  • Ability to wear a respirator when required to meet safety guidelines due to dusty environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including pre-employment medical and immunizations

WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Required to use hand tools.
  • Required to use a sampling table
  • Works directly in Plant; required to climb stairs, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, chemicals, process gases, bloodborne and other pathogens.
  • Works in dusty environment and wears respirator while in the Plant when required to meet Safety Guidelines.
  • Exposed to mobile equipment, moving equipment, and electrical hazards.
  • Exposed to hot and cold working environments.
  • Required to do heavy lifting and carrying, up to 49 pounds, a number of times per shift.

HOURS OF WORK :

Hours of Work : 8 hours / shift; however incumbent is required to adjust work hours as necessary to meet operational requirements.

  • Schedule Work Days : Monday to Friday
  • Lunch Break : 30 minute unpaid
  • Rest Breaks : Two 15 minute paid breaks
  • Base Hours : 40 hours per week / 2,080 hours per year
  • Ability and willingness to work 8-hour / 10-hour shifts, either day or evening, as currently, the facility operates up to 17 hours per day, 7 days per week;
