Surface Land Agent

Cardinal Energy Ltd. is seeking an experienced land agent that will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day engagement of stakeholders and the acquisition of surface rights in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The successful candidate will be able to resolve land related issues according to the applicable regulatory, legislative and company policies.

The position will be located in our main office in Calgary, Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

  • Negotiate new land takings, including easements, surface leases and dispositions with private and public stakeholders on crown and freehold land.
  • Identifying land requirements and potential risks on projects, acquisitions, and operational activities.
  • Asses and negotiate settlement of claims such as crop loss and damages.
  • Perform analysis for annual rent reviews on surface leases.
  • Coordinate and provide direction to asset teams and external Land consultants.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders regularly and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Develop recommendations for land strategies, processes, policies, and programs as well as resolutions for unique land issues, claims, negotiations, arbitrations and legal actions.
  • Provide support to internal engineering, operations, and reclamation teams, securing surface access to ensure that project timelines and objectives are met.
  • Support Emergency Preparedness and Response Training and Exercise Programs on behalf of Land through attendance at field exercises, drills, and deployments and training events.
  • Liaison with Rural Municipalities and Community Planning Division.
  • Assist with Subdivision application and re-zoning requirements related to our SAGD project.
  • Assist with obtaining a development permit, related to our SAGD project.
  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Licensed Land Agent in the province of Alberta.
  • Valid Commissioners for Oaths appointment.
  • 5-10 years related surface land experience working for a Land broker, or in house experience managing third party Land brokers, establishing quality standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrates strong initiative, innovation, teamwork as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel as required for project needs.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in multiple Canadian Provincial Jurisdictions is not required but is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in CS Land, Microsoft Word, Excel, ETS, StackDX, Accumap and / or Petro Ninja.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of agricultural practices.
  • Possesses a strong work ethic and thrives in a fast pace and dynamic work environment.
