The Faculty of Arts & Science invites applications for the following anticipated course offerings in the fall / winter 2024-25 terms :

VISM-4004 : Future Cinema-Digital Narratives (0.5 credit)

FALL 2024 : 9 / 4 / 2024 12 / 3 / 2024; Friday 03 : 10 PM - 06 : 10 PM; In-Person)

COURSE DESCRIPTION : Film, video and digital media have converged and continue to open new possibilities for multimedia production.

Classical cinematic narrative is transforming into a new culture of drama, gaming and fiction-based forms that merge traditional cinema, experimental literature, television, video, and the Internet.

This seminar focuses on a range of contemporary film, video and digital artists who move across analogue and digital media forms to construct experimental narratives and to represent developing discourses of post-human existence and embodied imaginaries produced by media convergence.

The course will present a range of contemporary theoretical approaches to frame analogue and digital narratives, including Peter Weibel’s "Future Cinema" and Katherine Hayles "How We Became Post-Human".

As well, key theoretical approaches to new multimedia narratives will be presented. The course involves weekly screenings and discussion of readings;

assignments include a research paper and analytical essays.

RESPONSIBILITIES : Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to : course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations / reviews;

including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines. QUALIFICATIONS :

  • The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or relevant discipline and / or equivalent professional / practical experience
  • Experience teaching at the post secondary level is considered an asset, equivalent relevant experience will be considered
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts. Sessional compensation includes a per-course pay scale with salary level of $6,871.

00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.

These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
