The team

Toronto Metropolitan University’s Facilities Management and Development (FMD) department involves care of the physical environment of the campus and strategic planning for existing and future spaces, including the impacts of those spaces.

FMD is responsible for functions including Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Services, Maintenance and Operations, Planning and Development, Project Management Office, Real Estate, and Sustainability.

The Opportunity

Are you an Electrician Journeyperson who is passionate about fire safety and providing the future leaders of tomorrow with a safe space to learn?

The Electrician / Fire Alarm Technician maintains the fire alarm and electrical systems of the University in a safe, efficient, organized and serviceable operating condition on a continuing basis.

Here are some things you can expect to do in this role :

Perform preventative, demand and corrective maintenance of fire alarm and electrical systems.

Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, log data and services fire-alarm and electrical systems

Comply with / meet all applicable standards, codes and regulations of the NFPA, Ontario Fire Code, CSA / Ontario Hydro Electrical Systems.

Read and interpret specifications and drawings for building electrical services and fire alarm systems and electrical / fire alarm code specifications to determine wiring layout for new and / or existing installations.

Operate and / or transport, regulate and adjust machinery, tools and appropriate measures, sees to their upkeep and to the upkeep of his / her work area(s).

Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical cables and conduit.

Position and install distribution boards, panels, transformers, switches, lights and junction boxes.

Pull wire through conduit and duct banks.

Connect wiring to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components to form a complete circuit.

Undertake a comprehensive preventative maintenance program and ensures that proper maintenance cycles are maintained and reported to the supervisor.

Test continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard test equipment such as ohmmeters, ampmeters, meggers, ground detectors etc

Complete bills of materials, estimate and other related documentation as required.

Demonstrate a strong commitment to client service.

Cooperate with other trades to ensure that assignments are completed in the most efficient manner.

When need arises, inform the Lead Hand / Supervisor of all abnormalities or defects.

Keep up-to-date with changing technology and techniques that are pursuant to the trade.

Wear the Toronto Metropolitan University uniform during working hours.

Perform any other duties as assigned by Lead Hand / Supervisor.

Qualifications

To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications :

  • Successful completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, preferably in a technical program.
  • Successful completion of a current Ontario Fire Alarm Technicians Certificate and a current Journeyman Electrician license, both in construction and maintenance.
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience as a capable Fire Alarm Technician and licensed Journeyman Electrician (construction and maintenance), performing fire alarm system maintenance, preferably with extensive experience in Edwards and Simplex fire alarm panels and related equipment.
  • Electrical maintenance and repair experience in a complex industrial, commercial or institutional facility with low voltage and 13.

8 kV substations with their switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, panels, buss and wire distribution systems extending from 24V to 600V AC single and three-phase services for a wide range of equipment including fan motors, variable frequency drives, furnaces, electronic equipment, synchronized clock systems, fire alarm and enunciator systems, security surveillance systems and a variety of electronic / electric or electro-pneumatic control systems of the heating and ventilation systems.

  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specification, software / systems, schematics and operational / product manuals.
  • Working knowledge of the National and Ontario Fire Codes, and the NFPA, CSA and Ontario Hydro Electrical Systems recommended practices.
  • Working knowledge of all computerized HVAC panels.
  • Working knowledge of computerized lighting systems.
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS and OH&S Act.
