The Opportunity

The Regulatory Applications (RA) Branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Reservoir Technologist to join the Subsurface Applications team. The Reservoir Technologist will evaluate and provide technical guidance and support for resource development related applications and submissions, gas removal applications, as well as rate limitation submissions. The role requires interacting with other technical professionals to review proposals, liaising with applicants, clearly articulating risks associated with each application, and making decisions on applications.

In the Regulatory Applications Branch, we pride ourselves on providing our staff with the opportunity to work on meaningful and challenging projects and initiatives. The AER’s Regulatory Applications team is fast paced, dynamic, and responsive to the needs of our internal and external stakeholders, while maintaining a focus on personal wellness, professional development, and work life balance.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Review and make decisions on equity and conservation-based applications for new and existing oil and gas developments. Apply risk based technical review principles to ensure applications are compliant with AER rules and regulations and ensure application timelines are met.
  • Liaise with representatives from industry, the public, and internal stakeholders during the application review process on regulatory requirements associated with oil and gas developments.
  • Perform desktop reviews to ensure operational risks associated with the development have been mitigated through the compliance and assurance mechanisms in place.
  • Support enterprise projects by providing technical guidance and input, assisting with the implementation into our core business functions and collaborating with the stakeholders (internal and external) as necessary.
  • Support the appeal and hearing processes, including Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) sessions.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • 5+ years of related experience in reservoir engineering or related Oil and Gas field of study within the Oil and Gas sector. Regulatory experience is an asset.
  • Technologist diploma in the area of Chemical or Oil and Gas.
  • Registered certified technologist with ASET or eligible for accreditation is required.
  • Ability to present and communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences. Strong written and verbal communication including technical writing.
  • Strong understanding of reservoir engineering principles.
  • Strong understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework and associated legislations and enactments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email . Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Opportunity to make a difference and be part of a performance driven team that is responsible for the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of Alberta’s energy and mineral resources.
  • The ability to leverage your expertise and critical thinking skills to contribute in wide-ranging, challenging, and complex work.
  • Flexible work options and hours, aligned with organizational policies.
  • Health spending account (HSA) and vacation entitlement available from your first day.
