Job description

About Us

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has been serving Edmonton and area since 1907, dedicated to helping people and pets thrive, together. As a leader in animal welfare, we go beyond sheltering homeless animals — shaping a community that values the human-animal bond through advocacy, education, and accessible support services.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of people and companion animals through sheltering animals in need, supporting pet guardians, engaging with our community and inspiring compassion. Guided by our values of compassion , trust , improvement , results , inclusivity and teamwork , we work toward a more humane and connected community for all.

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Shelter Flow, the Animal Flow Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day planning and coordination of animal pathways for animals in the care of the Edmonton Humane Society, including those in shelter, foster, and offsite placements. This role works closely with the admitting, animal care, adoptions, medical, and behaviour teams to maximize intake, minimize length of stay, and ensure the highest possible standards of animal welfare. The Animal Flow Specialist collaborates across departments to align people and processes throughout each animal’s journey from intake to outcome.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Animal Flow and Capacity

  • Monitor and manage animal flow and shelter capacity by entering onsite, offsite, and foster population data into the EHS Capacity Calculator three times weekly; track and adjust key metrics such as emergency boarding, surgery wait times, adoption rates, and shelter trends.
  • Participate in and lead population rounds as needed, collaborating with Behaviour and Medical teams on pathway planning to ensure all animals have clear next steps toward outcomes; chair weekly slow-track meetings for animals with 21+ days length of stay and implement action plans to support adoption.
  • Conduct virtual rounds for animals in foster care and offsite placements to ensure pathway planning, assist with foster department duties as needed, and maintain cross-training in all admitting functions to support shelter flow and maximize intake, including coordinating large-scale transfers in accordance with medical and foster policies.
  • Stay current on best practices and research in animal welfare, support implementation of progressive policies and procedures aligned with EHS strategic goals, and ensure all adoptable animals have quality photos and positive biographies by collaborating with Adoptions and Communications teams and uploading content to Shelter Buddy or Adopets to promote adoptability.

Database Management

  • Serve as Shelter Buddy Administrator by creating and deleting user accounts, completing support tickets, and acting as a liaison with IT and external software vendors.
  • Pull daily In-Care Inventory reports and ensure all animals are assigned fast- or slow-track status in Shelter Buddy within established target timeframes.
  • Audit shared spreadsheets daily to ensure accurate, up-to-date information and clear communication across departments and partner organizations.
  • Reporting and Meetings

  • Enter animal statistics into EHS Reporting Templates, including Key Indicators and Internal Measures reports, on a monthly and annual basis, and develop performance metrics related to animal flow and capacity as required.
  • Record capacity- and flow-related animal statistics in EHS Reporting Templates and collaborate with the Manager, Shelter Flow to adjust and develop additional performance measures as needed.
  • Prepare written reports and generate Shelter Buddy data and reports as requested by the Manager, Shelter Flow.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops, conferences, and other events as directed by the Manager, Shelter Flow, and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Education & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in animal science, animal welfare, or a related field, including shelter experience.
  • Completion of a Data Analytics certificate within 12 months of hire is required.
  • Experience researching best practices within an animal shelter environment and supporting the development and implementation of operational improvements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, with strong skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Skills & Abilities

A successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement and process improvement, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. They will bring excellent organizational and time management skills, a high level of diligence with documentation, and strong attention to detail. The role requires outstanding communication and presentation skills, along with the ability to think critically, solve problems creatively, and analyze data effectively. The ideal candidate takes a data-driven, evidence-based approach to decision-making and consistently applies strong analytical skills to improve outcomes.

    What we offer

We believe that a culture of belonging — where people’s unique backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives are valued and respected — strengthens our ability to serve both animals and people. Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and reconciliation helps us support pet guardians facing access-to-care challenges, strengthen the human-animal bond, and build a more compassionate, engaged, and inclusive society.

EHS is also a COR-certified employer, recognized by Alberta’s Certificate of Recognition program for maintaining the highest standards of health and safety for our staff, volunteers and the animals in our care.
