About Us
The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has been serving Edmonton and area since 1907, dedicated to helping people and pets thrive, together. As a leader in animal welfare, we go beyond sheltering homeless animals — shaping a community that values the human-animal bond through advocacy, education, and accessible support services.
Our mission is to enrich the lives of people and companion animals through sheltering animals in need, supporting pet guardians, engaging with our community and inspiring compassion. Guided by our values of compassion , trust , improvement , results , inclusivity and teamwork , we work toward a more humane and connected community for all.
The Role
Reporting to the Manager, Shelter Flow, the Animal Flow Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day planning and coordination of animal pathways for animals in the care of the Edmonton Humane Society, including those in shelter, foster, and offsite placements. This role works closely with the admitting, animal care, adoptions, medical, and behaviour teams to maximize intake, minimize length of stay, and ensure the highest possible standards of animal welfare. The Animal Flow Specialist collaborates across departments to align people and processes throughout each animal’s journey from intake to outcome.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Animal Flow and Capacity
- Monitor and manage animal flow and shelter capacity by entering onsite, offsite, and foster population data into the EHS Capacity Calculator three times weekly; track and adjust key metrics such as emergency boarding, surgery wait times, adoption rates, and shelter trends.
- Participate in and lead population rounds as needed, collaborating with Behaviour and Medical teams on pathway planning to ensure all animals have clear next steps toward outcomes; chair weekly slow-track meetings for animals with 21+ days length of stay and implement action plans to support adoption.
- Conduct virtual rounds for animals in foster care and offsite placements to ensure pathway planning, assist with foster department duties as needed, and maintain cross-training in all admitting functions to support shelter flow and maximize intake, including coordinating large-scale transfers in accordance with medical and foster policies.
- Stay current on best practices and research in animal welfare, support implementation of progressive policies and procedures aligned with EHS strategic goals, and ensure all adoptable animals have quality photos and positive biographies by collaborating with Adoptions and Communications teams and uploading content to Shelter Buddy or Adopets to promote adoptability.
