The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) is a non-profit organization with a mandate to provide social, cultural, education and employment services to the Indigenous peoples within the Calgary Metropolitan area.

  • enabling access to cultural and spiritual care; offering referrals for suitable housing, food, clothing, pursuit of education, skill development and training;

AFCC is a community leader in the advocacy of Indigenous social and cultural services while serving as a support and community resource to other Indigenous Service Agencies on the local, provincial and national level.

Role Description

The Community Engagement Specialist is an administrative position assisting other AFCC coordinators with the overall management of the Front Desk along with other duties throughout AFCC operations.

The Community Engagement Specialist is required to provide :

  • Communication and coordination of AFCC’s offices
  • First point of contact for community members accessing AFCC (walk-ins, telephone calls, emails)
  • Customer service and assistance to community members
  • Answer phone calls, respond to emails
  • Manage the organization of the front desk area and primary office
  • Provide outreach support for community members
  • Assist with general office duties
  • Support AFCC team members as required

Required Qualifications

  • Background and practical experience in working with Indigenous populations
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Indigenous culture, protocols, and histories
  • Experience working with community-based organizations
  • Experience in addictions, healthcare, social work or health care coordination considered an asset
  • Working knowledge or community health and addictions resources (addiction, health, lifestyle, etc.) considered an asset
  • Strong organizational skills as well as strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Diplomatic communication skills that can build positive relationships
  • Experience with basic computer programs (Word, Excel, etc.)

This a contract position that expires March 31, 2025 with a possibility of extension.
