Pomeroy is looking for a Linux Engineer to join our clients team in Toronto, ON. Candidates must have banking / financial industry experience and be a Canadian citizen / resident.

The Senior Linux Engineer - Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the banking industry provides expert technical leadership and is responsible for ensuring the stability, security, and scalability of Linux-based systems.

The role requires in-depth knowledge of the unique regulatory and security demands of the financial services sector. The SME will collaborate with IT, cybersecurity, and business teams to design and maintain secure, high-performance Linux infrastructure critical to supporting banking operations and services.

Key Responsibilities :

Design, implement, and maintain enterprise-level Linux systems that meet the high-security and high-availability requirements of the banking industry.

Serve as the go-to expert for all Linux-related matters, ensuring systems are optimized for performance, stability, and regulatory compliance.

Lead efforts to harden Linux systems against security vulnerabilities, ensuring adherence to financial industry standards such as PCI DSS, SOX, and GDPR.

Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to implement firewalls, SELinux, encryption, and other security controls.

Architect and implement disaster recovery solutions and business continuity plans for Linux systems, ensuring minimal downtime and quick recovery in case of an incident.

Design and manage failover, load balancing, and clustering strategies to support mission-critical financial systems.

Develop automation scripts (using Bash, Python, etc.) and configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef) to streamline system administration and deployment.

Automate repetitive tasks to improve system efficiency and reduce the risk of manual errors, especially in highly regulated environments.

Provide tier-3 support for complex Linux system issues, ensuring timely resolution of incidents that impact banking operations.

Conduct root cause analysis and implement preventive measures to avoid future disruptions.

Lead the migration and management of Linux systems in hybrid cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) tailored to banking workloads and security requirements.

Optimize virtualized environments using VMware, KVM, or other virtualization platforms while ensuring compliance with banking industry standards.

Technical Skills :

• Deep expertise in Linux distributions (e.g., Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu) in high-availability, high-security environments.
• Strong experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef) and scripting languages (Bash, Python).
• Advanced knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their compliance with banking regulations.
• Expertise in regulatory frameworks (PCI DSS, SOX, GDPR) and security standards (firewalls, SELinux, encryption, multi-factor authentication).
• Experience with disaster recovery planning, high availability architecture, and system monitoring.
• Familiarity with database management systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) in a Linux environment.
• Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, KVM) and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
