Part-Time Deck Attendant
Athletics and Wellness Centre

We are seeking candidates for Part-Time (4-20 hours / week) Deck Attendant positions to work in our Athletics and Wellness Centre (AWC). Various shifts will be available Saturday and Sunday between 8 : 45am-8 : 00pm. The successful candidates will join the Athletics and Wellness team and report to the Aquatics Coordinator and / or Director, Athletics and Wellness Centre.
Responsibilities :
Ensure safety of all students and patrons using the Athletics and Wellness Centre’s swimming pools;
Maintain direct contact with swimmers and communicate with them in an effective manner;
Support instructional swimming lessons to various age groups following established curriculum;
Assist Swim Instructors and Deck Supervisors with implements lesson plans, evaluations and managing the safety on deck;
Perform the critical task of being a member of a first responder team in case of an emergency and providing First Aid as needed throughout the pool and change room areas;
Monitor designated pool areas and maintain the cleanliness of the pool deck area, change rooms and shower areas including picking up equipment and storing it in its proper place in the equipment room, picking up towels and debris, organizing lost and found, etc.;
Report on required maintenance and perform related work, as required;
Conduct facility inspections, complete opening and closing checklists and advise Deck Supervisors of any concerns found;
Perform administrative tasks including taking attendance, assisting in level assessment, logging information into our online database, etc.
Demonstrate creativity and adaptability in problem solving through situations, and seek assistance when necessary;
Assist with other duties as assigned, some that may be delivered outside of the pool area; and
Serve as a positive, respectful and effective role model for all AWC swimmers and patrons;
Complete mandatory staff training before every Fall (October-December), Winter (January-March), Spring (April-June) session.
Required Qualifications and Experience :
Minimum 14 years of age;
Applicants hold a current Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid & CPR ‘C’;
Knowledge and practice of Lifesaving and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid;
Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of service situations in a busy aquatic facility;
Candidates must have the ability to exercise sound judgment and act decisively in an emergency situation;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
Ability to problem solve effectively, work independently with minimal supervision;
Ability to work as part of a team with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups;
Previous experience as an Assistant Instructor and / or Aquatic Volunteer is an asset;
Pool Attendant , National Lifeguard and Swim Instructor is an asset;
Ability to work flexible hours is an asset;
Must have or be willing to obtain WHMIS certification;
Must pass a background check.
Working Conditions :
Required to move, lift, carry, pull and place objects weighing less than or equal to 40 pounds without assistance;
Stand, sit or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire shift;
Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting and pulling; and
Move over sloping, uneven or slippery surfaces.
Rate : $17.20 / hour
