- Manage intake and triage by gathering information, providing a supportive response and de-escalating and stabilizing students when necessary and appropriate.
- Obtain relevant records (e.g., medical records) as appropriate and necessary and handle records with a high degree of sensitivity and integrity.
- Comply with FIPPA / PHIA regulations regarding handling of personal and medical information of students.- Refer students to the appropriate SCC, on-campus, and / or off-campus serviced based on a pre-determined criteria including deciding which students are prioritized for immediate assignment to SCC individual counselling services.
- Facilitate referrals to off-campus crisis services as appropriate.- Notify SCC Director and staff of priority referrals for SCC individual counselling services.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of resources on and off campus and liaise with resources to facilitate effective and appropriate referrals.
- Record details of contacts / assessments in the SCC data management system (i.e., Titanium Software).- Consult with SCC Director on intake and triage policies and procedures as necessary.
- Act as a liaison among unit staff, students, and the University community.- Keep appropriate records of contacts; initiate and respond to emails related to intake / triage.
- Complete project work as assigned. -Participate in Outreach activities as appropriate (e.g., participating in Critical Incident De-briefing sessions).
- Perform other duties as : MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION / TRAINING : - Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or Nursing, or a Master's Degree in Psychology from a recognized institution is required.
- Must be registered with the appropriate professional regulatory body. - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) or other crisis management / response training is an asset.
EXPERIENCE : - At least one year of experience providing direct support to clients in an office, agency or organization that provides mental health support services to individuals is required.
- Experience working with individuals from different cultures and generations is required. - Experience working in a post-secondary institution with students is preferred.
- Experience working with persons in emotional distress is required. Experience working within the disability community is an asset.
- Experience in supervising students / others is an asset as is experience presenting to groups. -Experience in liaising / consulting across professional disciplines is an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. SKILLS AND ABILITIES : - Strong understanding of the differences between various forms of assessment (learning disabilities, ADD / ADHD, psychiatric, or psychodiagnostic assessments) is required.
- Highly proficient interpersonal communication (verbal and written) including conflict management and resolution skills is required.
- Must be able to work well as a team member. - Must be able to work well under pressure and effectively handle a variety of tasks.
- Must be able to listen attentively to the story / situation of the student, absorb their information, and repackage their situation in a manageable way providing information and resources on how to help.
- Strong time management and organizational skills and excellent attention to detail is required.- Ability to maintain a calm presence in moments of high stress / anxiety.
- Ability to exhibit a calm, attentive, and welcoming presence when meeting with students. - Ability to work independently and with minimum direction is required.
- Ability to effectively respond to issues as they arise, actively problem solve and prioritize tasks is required. - The ability to deal with all levels of staff, student and members of the general public in a warm, tactful, polite, respectful and competent manner is required.
- A knowledge of referral processes and local resources is essential and the ability to develop, facilitate, and evaluate mental health outreach programming is an asset.
