Job Summary

The Manager, Health & Safety (H&S) provides practical expertise and tactical execution of the Company’s H&S programs. The incumbent drives the execution of occupational health and safety initiatives, including the development of policies, procedures, programs and training that result in regulatory / legislative compliance;

and a safe, healthy, and secure environment for employees, contractors and visitors in our Company workplaces. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring H&S compliance to reduce the Company’s risk.

Accordingly, the incumbent must be well-versed in all H&S legislation for the provinces and states in which we operate.

This role’s primary focus will be on setting up a H&S program in our distribution centres. This role will provide guidance on H&S to other cross functional partners, as assigned by the Director, Human Resources.

This is a functional manager role with no direct reports at this time. This role requires frequent travel to distribution centres in the GTA and occasional travel to other distribution centres and Company workplaces in Canada.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Operate in a way that builds trust with our customers, pets, and ACEs. Responds promptly and appropriately to H&S concerns raised from various sources, such as the employee hotline, JHSC committees, H&S Representatives, and labour inspectors.

Leads by example by demonstrating required behaviors and attitudes in order to establish a strong and positive safety culture.

Compassion Communicate and act from the heart with genuine care and courtesy. Develops promotional materials and administers recognition programs to promote safe and healthy workplaces.

Communicates change positively and seeks to enable change. Generates excitement to inspire others and always communicates in an open manner.

Expertise Provide knowledge in an understanding and informative way. Responsible for monitoring the adherence to the Company safety program by all ACEs, contractors, and visitors to the workplace.

Develops, implements and monitors health & safety and hazardous materials policies, practices and procedures throughout the Company in compliance with governmental regulations.

Conducts & documents risk assessments related to jobs (Job Hazard Analysis) and new equipment introductions. Recommends appropriate risk mitigation to management.

Partners with HR Generalists and department Managers on injury reporting, workers’ compensation claim handling, and return to work plans.

Acts as the primary point of contact with labour / provincial inspectors to resolve H&S concerns and address orders, as they arise.

Partners with HR Generalists and department Managers to address and resolve H&S inspection orders.Analyzes and makes recommendations regarding safety costs and initiatives.

Conducts or coordinates worker training in areas such as safety laws, regulations, hazardous materials, use of safety equipment, or use of powered equipment in the distribution centres.

Partners with the Learning department as required.Conducts or coordinates daily, weekly, monthly inspections of workplaces;

participates directly in spot audits, and develops plans to address any issues identified or prepares notices for management to correction of identified hazards.

Develops safety & health related materials for employee orientation for stores, distribution centres & offices.Develops regular safety training materials (bulletins, new training materials, sign offs, etc.

and distributes to all locations.Ensures that joint health & safety committees are in place and operating as required by law, including the nomination of members, certification of Management & Employee Reps, and that meeting minutes are appropriately recorded and posted.

Participates in the review of new operations, processes and procedures (as well as proposed changes to existing operations) at the proposal and / or design phase to ensure health & safety matters are considered and incorporated.

Efficiency Use time and resources responsibly. Develops regular reporting metrics; prepares reports for senior management on monthly safety statistics.

Advises senior management on the status of claims, loss experience and accident trends.Monitors changes to provincial, state and federal safety regulations and proactively builds or revises programs to address changing regulatory needs.

Maintains a continuous improvement mindset and finds ways to reduce injury costs to the Company

Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications

  • Bachelors degree in H&S or related field
  • CRSP, CHSC or similar designation would be an asset
  • JHSC Certication would be an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience within a safety role; ideally in retail, food service, hospitality or similar environment
  • Experience in the distribution centre / logistics / transportation industry strongly preferred.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters regarding security or personnel issues.
  • Experience with Canadian health & safety regulations.
  • Ability to regularly travel within Canada and the ability to periodically work shifts in order to coincide with store or distribution centre operations.
