Description

Equinox Engineering Ltd. is a Calgary-based EPCM firm and a market leader in oil and gas processing, specializing in the design and execution of facilities worldwide. Our projects span natural gas processing, conventional and heavy oil, carbon capture, emerging energy technologies, and pipeline infrastructure. We work with major energy producers across Canada and internationally, delivering innovative and practical engineering solutions.

The Process Engineer-in-Training (EIT) will play an important role in supporting the development of safe, efficient, and reliable facility designs while gaining valuable experience across a diverse portfolio of energy projects. This role is ideally suited to a motivated early-career engineer who is eager to learn, contribute to multidisciplinary project teams, and build a strong foundation in process engineering.

Why Join Equinox?

  • Meaningful work on a diverse portfolio of energy projects.
  • A people-focused culture that values technical excellence, mentorship, and continuous learning.
  • Exposure to experienced engineering professionals and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Flexible and supportive work environment designed for long-term career growth.
  • Opportunities to develop technical and leadership skills through real project experience.

What You’ll Do

As a Process Engineer-in-Training, you will support the delivery of safe, practical, and high-quality engineering solutions while working closely with senior engineers and project teams.

Technical Development

  • Assist with process simulations and modelling for oil and gas processing facilities.
  • Support the preparation of material balances, heat and material balances, and process calculations.
  • Assist in developing Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and equipment process data sheets.
  • Perform line sizing calculations, pressure safety valve (PSV) sizing, and other engineering calculations under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical documentation and engineering deliverables.
  • Participate in engineering studies and process evaluations involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass balance analysis.

Collaboration & Project Support

  • Work collaboratively with process, mechanical, instrumentation, electrical, civil, and project management teams.
  • Support project teams with technical coordination, scheduling, and budget tracking activities.
  • Interface with vendors and suppliers to obtain technical information and support equipment selection activities.
  • Assist senior engineers in developing practical engineering solutions that align with project objectives and client requirements.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment while actively seeking opportunities for professional growth and development.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Participate in P&ID reviews, HAZOPs, and other process safety reviews.
  • Support the development of safe and operable facility designs.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, including API, ASME, ISO, and other industry standards.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

Project Execution

  • Support commissioning and start-up activities as required.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and operational support for facility projects.
  • Contribute to the timely completion of engineering deliverables while maintaining quality standards.
  • Develop practical problem-solving skills through hands-on project involvement.

About You

You are an enthusiastic and motivated engineer who is eager to learn from experienced professionals and contribute to meaningful projects. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy solving technical challenges. You bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation, or eligibility for registration with APEGA.
  • 1-4 years of experience in an EPCM environment, process engineering role, or related industry.
  • Strong understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, including thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Foundational knowledge of process design, heat transfer, mass transfer, and pressure relief systems.
  • Familiarity with process safety principles and risk management practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, HYSYS, and other process simulation software.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to professional development.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous internship, co-op, or work experience in process engineering or the energy industry.
  • Exposure to EPCM project environments.
  • Experience with process simulation software and engineering design tools.
