Description
We are looking for a motivated QA / Software Development Co-op student to join our software development team based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This position provides an opportunity to contribute primarily to quality assurance and testing activities for a modern engineering software platform consisting of a web application and API platform. Responsibilities include test case development and execution, automated testing, database testing, validation of new features, and supporting software quality initiatives. Previous software development experience is considered an asset and may provide opportunities to contribute to development-related tasks.
The successful candidate will work closely with software developers and other members of the engineering team to help develop, test, troubleshoot, and improve the reliability and quality of our software.
This is a hands-on position where you will gain experience working with real-world software development practices, including source control, code reviews, automated testing, APIs, databases, and containerized applications.
Responsibilities
- Create and execute test plans, test cases, automated tests and regression tests.
- Test web application functionality, including user interfaces, workflows, validation, and error handling.
- Test REST APIs for functionality, reliability, data validation, and error handling.
- Develop automated tests where appropriate to improve regression testing and software quality.
- Perform database testing using Microsoft SQL Server, including validating data and database operations.
- Identify, reproduce, document, and track software defects.
- Troubleshoot issues by analyzing application behavior, API responses, database data, and application logs.
- Participate in code reviews and provide feedback related to software quality and maintainability.
- Work with developers to investigate and resolve defects.
- Assist with integration and end-to-end testing across the web application, APIs, and database.
- Work with Docker/containerized applications as part of the development and testing environment.
Required Experience and Skills
- Currently enrolled in a university or college program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Understanding of fundamental software development concepts.
- Basic programming experience in at least one modern programming language such as C#, JavaScript, Python, or similar.
- Understanding of software testing concepts and methodologies.
- Ability to write and understand SQL queries.
- Basic understanding of relational databases, preferably Microsoft SQL Server.
- Familiarity with web applications and HTTP concepts.
- Understanding of REST APIs and JSON.
- Familiarity with Git/source control.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and an interest in finding software defects and edge cases.
- Availability for a full-time 12 month position.
- In-Office presence 5 days a week required.

The typical pay range for an intern is currently CAD $25.00 - $44.00 per hour. Starting base pay will depend on level of education and the ultimate job duties and requirements.
