Primary Objectives :

HSB Canada’s Head Office Engineering Department (HOED) is our center of competence for technical consultancy and risk assessment of highly exposed risks across North America.

Our multi-disciplined team of experienced engineers assess operational risks, equipment breakdown (EB), property loss control, and inherent hazards across a multitude of industrial processes.

Our expertise supports our Underwriters, Claims Adjusters, Brokers, and Insureds in quantitatively assessing risk and recommending meaningful loss control practices.

We are looking for an experienced and self-directed Engineer with expertise in property loss prevention and equipment breakdown to join our team as a Senior Account Engineer.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Develop and maintain a deep technical understanding of our insured’s businesses and operations to enable world-class insurance engineering services.
  • Perform annual technical risk reviews for assigned all-risk accounts, with a focus on hydroelectric renewable energy.
  • Communicate engineering findings, opinions, and recommendations to executive panels.
  • Lead and / or participate in on-site EB risk evaluation and / or property loss prevention surveys at locations across North America.
  • Identify and evaluate property loss exposures based on building construction, occupancy hazards and related protection features, critical equipment, NAT / CAT hazards, alignment with NFPA guidelines and building code.
  • Obtain and evaluate technical data and reports to understand and quantify operating plants and equipment hazards, exposures, perils and deficiencies, along with appropriate loss prevention strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with Underwriters and Claims Adjusters to provide engineering opinions, loss prevention plans, perform necessary calculations, and prepare loss estimates.
  • Contribute to the growth, improvement, and instruction of our intellectual capital through the development of technical articles, educational tutorials, and technical bulletins.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering,
  • Training / education in Fire Protection Technology or Fire Science is considered an asset,
  • 15 years of relevant professional experience with at least 5 years focused on Fire Protection and / or Property Loss Prevention and Control.

Relevant professional experience is recognized as providing technical services within heavy industries, such as engineering & design, operations, maintenance, asset care, capital projects, risk management, and loss prevention.

  • Exposure to heavy industries such as power generation, chemicals, oil & gas, mining, industrial manufacturing, with renewable energy being preferred,
  • Proficiency with NFPA, NATCAT modelling, fire safety design, and typical insurance industry standards,
  • Proficiency in summarizing and communicating complex topics to executive panels, both in written and verbal form,
  • Strong working knowledge of renewable power generation operations and equipment such as hydraulic turbines, generators, transformers, penstock, tail race etc.,
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical documentation,.
  • Bilingual in English and French is highly desirable,
  • Proficient in report writing, use of MS Office applications,
  • Previous experience in the Insurance Industry is considered an asset but not required,
  • This role will require travel to conduct site visits as deemed necessary by Underwriting and Claims departments.
