Duties
The Royal is currently hiring for our Registered Practice Nurse float pool. The Registered Practical Nurse will work a scheduled rotation, however, the shifts will be split between Long-Term Care, the Geriatric Inpatient Program, and ECT (at the discretion of the needs of each unit, and scheduled by the scheduling department).
The Registered Practical Nurse must be able to work on the stated units within the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre.
- Maximize the person’s function, participation and control in their recovery.
- Promotes healthy lifestyle changes through health teaching.
- Provides person centered care, by incorporating knowledge of the unique needs of older adults with mental health challenges & / or varying stages of cognitive deficits.
- Identifies patient / resident needs and responds to them appropriately and promptly.
- Monitors and documents patient / resident response to therapeutic intervention and reports unexpected outcomes to the RN.
- Collaborates with the Registered Nurse to effectively manage rapidly changing situations.
- Demonstrates an awareness of and complies with, the vision and value statements of the Royal, relevant policies, procedures, responsibilities and routines and other relevant information..
- Promotes a supportive working relationship and effective communication of the interdisciplinary team.
- Establishes and promotes effective therapeutic relationships between staff members, patients and their families.
- Accountable to meet College of Nurses of Ontario Standards for RPN’s.
- Provides guidance and assistance for unregulated care providers ensuring they provide quality, resident-focused care, are aware of, and comply with the vision and value statements of the ROP, relevant policies, procedures, responsibilities and routines and other relevant information.
- Engages in enhancing knowledge through ongoing learning, education and reflective practice.
- Administers medications and performs treatments within the RPN’s full scope of practice according to applicable regulations and the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards and policies and procedures of the Royal.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Work in a manner that complies with staff and patient / client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Harassment-Free Workplace Policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
- Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing;
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Minimum of two years recent experience with older adults with psychiatric / mental health illness preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years recent experience in a long-term care setting with psychiatric / mental health specialization preferred.
- Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
- Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
- WHMIS update in preceding 12 months.
- Fire Training update in the past 12 months.
- CPR Certification within the last 12 months.
- Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training ( required.
- GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training and training, or other related dementia care training is preferred.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Current knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques.
- Must complete RAI-MDS training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MDS system is required on an ongoing basis.
- English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading and writing.Bilingual (English / French) is considered an asset.
Salary Range : 35.36 to 37.05 per hour
