Controller

Hockley Valley Resortmono, on, Canada

Job description

Reports To: General Manager

Department: Finance & Accounting

Compensation: Salary $80,000 - $90,000 plus bonus

The Opportunity

Lead the Numbers. Influence the Business. Shape What's Next.

Hockley Valley Resort and Adamo Estate Winery offer a distinctive opportunity to lead finance at a four-season destination set across 300 acres of scenic countryside. With 108 guest rooms and a diverse range of operations—including restaurants, a lounge, banquets and events, skiing, golf, a spa, and a winery—our business offers an engaging and varied financial landscape.

We are seeking an experienced, forward-thinking Controller to lead our Finance & Accounting department and serve as a key member of the Executive Committee. Reporting directly to an accessible, on-site General Manager, this role offers the opportunity to work closely with operational leaders, influence business decisions, and contribute to the continued financial and operational success of both Hockley Valley Resort and Adamo Estate Winery.

This is more than an accounting role. It is an opportunity to connect financial insight with business performance, strengthen decision-making across departments, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability in a dynamic, multi-faceted operation. The role also requires regular communication, reporting, and collaboration with Sunray Corporate to ensure alignment with corporate expectations, reporting requirements, and business objectives.

Following the departure of our long-serving Controller, the successful candidate will build on an established financial foundation while bringing fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a commitment to continuous improvement. A planned transition period, with the outgoing Controller available to provide mentorship and support for several months, will help ensure a smooth handover of knowledge, systems, and relationships.

If you are a confident financial leader who enjoys working collaboratively, developing people, and helping a business reach its full potential, we invite you to explore this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the General Manager and Executive Committee, providing timely, accurate, and actionable financial insights.
  • Lead annual budgeting, biweekly revenue forecasting, and financial planning in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Analyze financial results, operating trends, and key performance indicators to identify opportunities, risks, and areas for improvement.
  • Support strategic and operational decisions through financial analysis, scenario planning, and evaluation of business initiatives.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and overall financial performance to support the organization's financial health.
  • Monitor inventory management and use to ensure alignment with expected business results.
  • Help translate financial information into practical recommendations that support sound business decisions across the resort and winery.
  • Maintain regular communication and reporting to Sunray Corporate, liaising with the Corporate office on financial matters, business performance, reporting requirements, and corporate initiatives.

Accounting, Reporting & Compliance

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Accounting department, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure financial statements and management reports are accurate, timely, consistent, and prepared in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Coordinate and provide required financial information, reports, and supporting documentation to Sunray Corporate, ensuring timely communication, accurate reporting, and alignment with corporate policies, procedures, and reporting requirements.
  • Establish, maintain, and monitor effective internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and local tax, employment-related, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate financial documentation and support sound financial governance across the organization.

Budgeting & Operational Performance

  • Partner with department leaders to develop and monitor budgets, investigate variances, and identify appropriate corrective actions.
  • Analyze revenue, labour costs, payroll trends, and operating expenses to identify opportunities for improved efficiency and financial performance.
  • Develop meaningful financial and operational reports that help managers understand results, monitor performance, and take informed action.
  • Establish and monitor relevant financial and operating benchmarks across the company’s diverse business areas.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting systems, workflows, and the effective use of technology.
  • Work collaboratively with operational leaders to strengthen budget accountability and align financial performance with business objectives.
  • Lead, support, and develop a four-person Accounting team, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented work environment.
  • Establish clear expectations, promote professional development, and encourage continuous improvement within the department.
  • Build strong working relationships across the resort and winery, helping department leaders develop greater financial awareness and confidence in managing their operations.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, cross-training, and processes are in place to support business continuity and the long-term effectiveness of the department.
  • Work closely with the General Manager and Executive Committee to support organizational priorities and operational success.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • A minimum of five years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with demonstrated growth in responsibility.
  • Experience leading or supervising an accounting or finance function, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate financial information into clear, practical business recommendations.
  • Knowledge of payroll processes, labour cost analysis, product cost analysis, banking, cash management through working floats, credit card transactions, and applicable tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with accounting systems, financial reporting tools, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leaders, operational teams, and corporate stakeholders.
  • A collaborative leadership style, sound judgment, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to accuracy and accountability.
  • The ability to balance strategic priorities with the practical demands of day-to-day financial operations.
  • The ability to meet corporate reporting deadlines and communicate financial information clearly and effectively to multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in hospitality, tourism, resorts, food and beverage, events, retail, or another multi‑department service business.
  • A CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • Experience partnering with senior management or an executive leadership team.
  • Experience improving financial systems, reporting processes, and operational efficiencies.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Excel.

Hospitality experience and a professional accounting designation are considered assets. We welcome candidates whose financial expertise, leadership capabilities, and business judgment demonstrate their ability to succeed in a complex, service-oriented organization.

  • A diverse and engaging business: Work across a unique four-season destination encompassing accommodations, restaurants, lounge operations, banquets and events, skiing, golf, spa services, and winery operations.
  • A meaningful voice in business decisions: As a member of the Executive Committee, contribute directly to financial planning, operational priorities, and the organization's future direction.
  • An accessible leadership team: Work directly with an on‑site General Manager who values collaboration, communication, and informed decision‑making.
  • Corporate collaboration: Work with Sunray Corporate to support financial reporting, corporate initiatives, and alignment with broader business objectives.
  • An established team and supported transition: Lead an existing four-person Accounting team, with mentorship and knowledge-transfer support from the outgoing Controller for several months.
  • An opportunity to make a difference: Build on established financial practices while identifying opportunities to improve reporting, processes, systems, and business performance.
  • A distinctive workplace: Contribute to the success of a 300-acre, four‑season destination that brings together hospitality, recreation, events, and wine.

Hockley Valley Resort & Adamo Estate Winery are committed to attracting a capable financial leader who will help strengthen our financial foundation and contribute to our continued success.
