Duties and Responsibilities: Maintains City’s fleet of heavy, medium and light duty vehicles for the Works, Transit, Fire, and Parks departments.

This includes off-road and specialized equipment.

  • Tests, diagnoses, analyzes and repairs vehicles in accordance with Manufacturer’s specifications Uses OEM software including, but not limited to: Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Meritor, Bendix, Voith, International trucks DLB and NED, Freightliner Diagnostic link, E technician, Volvo Uses prescribed service manuals (hardcopy and electronic), technical reference materials and schematic diagrams Makes mechanical repairs, such as, but not inclusive: Replaces and repairs brakes Replaces springs Changes tires Repairs gas, diesel and propane engines, Air conditioning troubleshooting and repairs Dickey John troubleshooting, repairs and calibration GPS installations, repairs and troubleshooting Operated personal and shop tools such as: hoists, cranes, air tools, power tools, saws, presses, torches, etc.
  • Regularly services and checks the overall condition of each vehicle: Tune ups, oil changes, grease, undercoating and rustproofing Responds to emergency calls when the vehicle breaks down while in service: Responsible for complete safety inspections in compliance with Ministry of Transportation guidelines and corporate standards Services and repairs City equipment such as, but not inclusive: Loaders, graders, brush chippers Compressors Pressure washers, air and hydraulic equipment All licensed and unlicensed equipment Completes the mechanics work order detailing materials and time used on each task. This may be written or computer generated.

May be responsible for computer stock withdrawals Ability to diagnose, analyze and service motor power systems and vehicles in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and specifications.

Performs other duties related to the Board of Works such as, but not inclusive: Metal work, e.g.

body work, painting, fabricating Carpentry work Electrical and plumbing Change heavy equipment attachments Carries out work assignments in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act requirements, and any other safety policies, procedures and regulations, etc.

Ensures that all necessary personal protective equipment (e.g.

safety boots, hearing protection, eye protection, etc.) is used and is maintained in good condition.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsible for reporting work accomplishments, resources used and time spent.

Works under general supervision.

Must be prepared to update qualifications and attend training seminars.

Qualifications: Minimum Grade 12 diploma or GED, with preference given to applicants who have graduated from a 2 year college program Valid 310T(Truck & Coach License) and 310S(Automotive License) in good standing with Ontario College of Trades Ozone Depletion Certificate Preference will be given to applicants with experience servicing and repairing heavy equipment Valid DZ driver’s license in good standing Must be in excellent physical condition, with an ability to work in adverse weather conditions Must work well independently and with others Must have an excellent knowledge of electronic and hydraulic systems as well as the ability to read and understand electrical schematics Experience welding and cutting including the use of oxygen, acetylene, arc and MIG welding Experience rebuilding/repairing a wide range of equipment and vehicles Must possess the ability to read and interpret parts & service manuals as well as wiring schematics Working Conditions: Subject to working in all weather conditions as emergency repairs are performed at job sites.

Subject to usual garage conditions such as moderate amounts of noise, dust, grit, oil/grease, fumes, solvents or paints.

Required to do heavy lifting.

Subject to shift work and overtime as required.
