Vanderwell is an Alberta, family-owned company operating in northern Alberta for more than 80 years. We have modern sawmill, planer mill, and pellet mill facilities, which produce dimensional lumber, wood pellets, shavings, and chips for wholesale customers.
We’re a major employer in the local region, we have more than 160 employees working throughout the operation -- mill production, sales & shipping, woodlands, truck and mobile equipment shops, and administration. Contract and part-time employees are also employed in maintenance, transportation, and seasonal activities.

The Opportunity
We are currently looking to hire a Sawmill Shift Supervisor for our manufacturing facilities near Slave Lake, Alberta. Job duties include:
- Supervising employees in a multi-trade environment to provide a high level of maintenance and uptime in all areas of the sawmill
- Ensuring that assigned work is completed in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring proper job and safety procedures are followed
- Conducting daily mill inspections to monitor the condition of mill equipment / machinery and coordinates repairs and/or replacement of parts with the maintenance team
- Making recommendations to improve equipment reliability and cost saving measures
- Investigating any accidents or incidents involving plant equipment and makes recommendations for equipment and/or procedure redesign to prevent future accidents and/or incidents
- Assisting in major equipment overhauls and maintenance shutdowns
- Addressing scheduling issues and conflicts; completes employee time sheets for proper pay
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Production Manager
- Works Monday - Thursday, rotating days and nights
Working Conditions:
- Exposed to noise, dust, falling debris, moving machinery, weather extremes, splinters, slipping and tripping hazards
- Lifting heavy, awkward objects and climbing on equipment may be required
- Required use of PPE appropriate for the task and working conditions
Must have:
- A solid work ethic, be eager to learn, and be a team player
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in the lumber industry; 3 years’ experience in sawmills
- Minimum of 5 years' of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment
- A mechanical aptitude; millwright experience is an asset
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office
- Experience managing crews efficiently
