Job description

Summary

The Skilled Material Handler is responsible for safely loading, unloading, moving, staging, and preparing steel materials within the shop and yard. This role requires prior experience handling steel in an industrial or manufacturing environment and the ability to operate material-handling equipment. The Skilled Material Handler is expected to follow all safety procedures, use proper lifting techniques, and support efficient shop operations.

Job Duties

  • Load, unload, move, and stage steel materials in the shop and yard
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment
  • Handle steel products of varying sizes and weights using safe lifting and rigging practices
  • Prepare materials for shipping, including stacking, wrapping, and securing loads
  • Assist with inventory activities such as counting, weighing, and identifying materials
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Previous experience handling steel in an industrial or manufacturing environment is required
  • Forklift operation experience
  • Overhead crane experience
  • Knowledge of safe lifting, rigging, and material handling techniques
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions
  • Effective verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs

Work Conditions

  • Industrial manufacturing and fabrication environment
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and moving equipment
  • Repetitive physical tasks in a fast-paced setting
  • Required use of PPE (steel-toed boots, eye and hearing protection, hard hat, etc.)
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry materials
  • Overtime may be required
