Job description

SMS Equipment is seeking a Machine Control Technology Specialist (internally titled Technology Solutions Expert) to support and promote advanced grade control and GPS-based technology used on heavy construction equipment. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role that combines technical troubleshooting, training, and solution support with the opportunity to influence adoption of machine control systems across our customer base. You’ll work directly with equipment in the field, helping customers maximize the performance of OEM-integrated and aftermarket machine control solutions.

Work Location: Saskatoon, SK; Regina, SK; or Winnipeg, MB.
Salary: $95,000 to $110,000 annually.
Work arrangement: Hybrid – providing the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week.
Travel: Travel will be required within an assigned region.
Schedule: Monday to Friday.

What You'll Do

  • Geomatic / Machine Control.Assist our internal and external customers with calibrating system controls, ensuring machine precision, maximizing the benefits of the system. Understand the creation of computer-aided drafting systems, geographical informational systems, and global positioning systems.
  • Deliver technical presentations and demonstrations of machine control capabilities to customers and other stakeholders as required. Promote machine control solutions to our internal and external customers and highlight product features, efficiencies, and advantages, using data collected, interpreted and presented.
  • Technical Support.Investigate and trouble shoot machine control system errors and failures as they occur. Provide technical service advice and information to customers, technicians, and O.E.M. representatives. Provide product training to customers, staff, and other stakeholders. Develop training courses as required.
  • Operations Support.Act as key liaison between SMS’s branches, customers, and suppliers in areas of technical resolution that cannot be resolved at a branch level. Provide feedback regarding potential product improvements, marketing, training, and support personnel.

What You Bring

The successful candidate will possess a Degree or Diploma in Geomatics Technology, Computerized Land Surveying or Geographical Information Systems. Experience as a field Heavy Equipment Technician working with smart equipment will also be considered. Other requirements include:

  • Experience with GPS machine control systems or equipment, such as Topcon, Trimble, or Leica.
  • Experience in an equipment dealership or a construction company is preferred.
  • 10 years experience in a related industry working with smart equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of Total Stations and GPS machine control.
  • 3D GNSS construction experience.
  • Self-disciplined and highly organized.
  • Solutions thinker with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Exceptional problem -solving skills with the ability to work under pressure in time sensitive situations.
  • Strong influencing skills to encourage customers to adopt best practices and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • Valid Class 5/G drivers license.
