Job description

Family Practitioner, Okanagan Correctional Centre

BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS)

Regular, Part Time (2 days per week)

Oliver, BC

You are a Family Physician seeking to diversify your experience while making a direct impact on people’s lives in your chosen community. This part-time opportunity will allow you to build your professional practise portfolio in the area of mental health and addictions, without the overhead/start-up costs that come with operating a speciality clinic. Enjoy working within an inter-professional team, with full access to the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to support delivery of comprehensive patient care. Your good care is someone’s future opportunity.

“For the last sixteen years, I have practiced Correctional Medicine and I love it. There is never a dull moment; seeing interesting and complex medical patients in a safe environment. I have excellent nursing and administrative support, work part time, and really enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team. There is no overhead working in the jail and enjoy good remuneration. I would recommend working in Correctional Medicine to anyone with experience in mental health and addictions and who has a desire to make a difference in the lives of inmate-patients.”

- Shared by Dr. Margaret Robertson, Family Practitioner

What you’ll do

We are seeking a Family Practitioner (FP) at the Okanagan Correctional Centre to help us improve access to primary health care as well as mental health and substance use support for clients in correctional centres. The FP is an important member of the health care team and works alongside other health care experts on a supportive and inter-professional team to provide quality care for clients and help them live an active life during their time in custody and as they reintegrate into the community.

This new model of health care provides the opportunity to grow your expertise as a Primary Care Practitioner in an environment where you are supported from day one, and where leaders and colleagues across disciplines will support you every step of the way. Be part of a team where you can live and work in your community, positively influence an incarcerated individual’s journey down a new path, and see the difference you can make as you serve the diverse populations of the BC Corrections system.

What you bring

Qualifications:

  • Eligible for provisional or full licensure with CPSBC
  • Certification with the College of Family Physicians, or equivalent, is mandatory.

Assets:

  • Experience in working with patients across a broad spectrum of psychiatric illness, substance use disorders, and personality difficulties
  • Experience in Correctional Health and/or additional certification or training

What we do

(BCMHSUS) cares for people with complex mental health and substance use challenges. part of the provincial mental health services continuum, provides a diverse range of specialized, "one-of-a-kind" tertiary mental health and substance use services to adults across the province. These include services located at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and six regional clinics, the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health & Addiction, and Heartwood Centre for Women. In addition to delivering these clinical services, BCMHSUS provides provincial leadership for system-wide improvement through its work in: health promotion and illness prevention; knowledge exchange; and research and academic teaching. BCMHSUS is program within the Provinical Health Services Authority (PHSA).

Correctional Health Services (CHS) is an integral part of British Columbia’s health care system and the newest service of BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services, a part of the Provincial Health Services Authority. We provide health services at all 10 Correctional Centres across British Columbia.

The Provincial Health Services Authority () plans, manages and evaluates specialized health services with the BC health authorities to provide equitable and cost-effective health care for people throughout the province. Our values reflect our commitment to excellence and include: Respect people – Be compassionate – Dare to innovate – Cultivate partnerships – Serve with purpose.

Learn more about PHSA and our programs:

PHSA and BCMHSUS are committed to employment equity, encouraging all qualified individuals to apply. We recognize that our ability to provide the best care for our diverse patient populations relies on a rich diversity of skills, knowledge, background and experience, and value a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

Reconciliation is an ongoing process and a shared responsibility for all of us. The BC Governments’ unanimous passage of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act was a significant step forward in this journey—one that all health authorities are expected to support as we work in cooperation with Indigenous Peoples to establish a clear and sustainable path to lasting reconciliation. True reconciliation will take time and ongoing commitment to work with Indigenous Peoples as they move toward self-determination. Guiding these efforts Crown agencies must remain focused on creating opportunities that implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Mandate.
