Description :
Course number and title : FOR3018HF – Equity in Urban Forestry
Course description :
Urban forests, trees, and greenspaces are complex and storied spaces with a multitude of intricate systems that traverse social, cultural and political dimensions. As a field of research and practice, urban forestry is increasingly being informed through a diversity, equity and inclusivity lens. These considerations are critical for a healthy social ecology as well as sustainable landscapes.
Combining both theoretical and applied approaches to urban ecological knowledge, this course will profile cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary learnings in social and ecological equity as they relate to urban forest planning and management. Topics covered include urban forest governance, community connections and compositions, Indigenous perspectives, unconventional collaborations, marginalization and vulnerability, power relations, diverse perspectives and social constructions, ethics and justice, education and engagement, art and activism, resiliency, and labour contentions. Through an equity and justice lens, this course examines human and non-human agency and the actions and interactions that can help steer a healthy civil society towards more equitable urban forest practices including access to knowledge, resources, and opportunities for different communities.
